SBS 2003 Help

I have a Small Business Server 2003 set up, and mainly use it for Exchange. its been set up for about a year and running well, but i have a few problems and questions. I'm very much a newbie, and totally self taught, so please excuse my noobness. I'll do one topic at a time if that's okay?

Okay, one of our XP PC's on the domain has failed, and i have a replacement ready running XP. Previously the My Documents re-direction has been put in place. So what the best way to connect the replacement PC to the server/domain so that the user can have access to his original files in My Documents?

Thanks in advance

Re: SBS 2003 Help

the my docs redirection should be by the user , so if a user logs into any PC ( with domain credentials ) , his my docs are redirected to their home directory.

You should be able to join the new PC to the domain as you did with all the others.

it is done via GPO on the server so once the PC is connected to the domain and the user logs into their account it should do the redirect.

Re: SBS 2003 Help

Thanks, before adding the new PC, do i have to remove/delete the original PC from the server? When i set the server up i added users and the PC's via the wizard, so not sure the CORRECT way of adding PC's to the domain.

PS what happens to the licence for the original PC?

Re: SBS 2003 Help

SBS licencing is based on concurrent connections so you should be ok - althoguh for neatness sake you might want to remove the computer account for the old machine.

All adding users to the pc in the connectcomputer wizard does is to make them local admins - unless you set it otherwise , anyone can log onto the machine.

Re: SBS 2003 Help

I would not worry about the SBS licencing for this machine as SBS licencing can only be said that it is terminally broken.

What you get listed under licencing in Server management is a guess and generally is never accurate.

Hence why SBS08 is all paper licences (but I digress)

Re: SBS 2003 Help

I've just checked and it seams that the default My Doc's re-direction hasn't worked, the My Documents folder is redirected to the folder called Users Shared Folders by default, there are user folders in the Users Shared Folder but it appears each user folder is empty.

I have also tried logging in another user on a differant PC, and the My Doc's are not available for that user. So not sure whats gone wrong?

hmmm I wonder if the redirect isn't being set by group policy but on a per user basis locally.

Ok first things first:

If you browse on the server, is the users my docs there? Should be under \\server\users\%username%

i have browsed the server, to C:\Users Shared Folders (the share name is 'users') there are folders in there, named as each user, but each folder is empty. for example my folder is empty C:\Users Shared Folders\Paul

ok, so we've either never enabled folder redirection (its an all on, or all off setting, not per user), or its not been working.

Have a look through the event logs on a PC to check for folder redirection errors.

Is the old PC still salvageable?

Re: SBS 2003 Help

From Documentation
When you enable folder redirection, the My Documents folder is redirected to the folder called Users Shared Folders by default. If you redirect the My Documents folder to another location, you need to first set the correct permissions on the folder.
it is defiantly enabled, and to the default location, I'm guessing that its never been working.

I'll check those logs, the PC is probably salvageable, I've not looked at it, all i know he had some blue screens over the course of the week, and not apparently it won't boot.

would it pay to disable the re-direction, then re-enable it? and how would this affect other users?

It may be worth just double checking from the server console; Under the manage users, click configure my documents redirection. If it is redirecting, you need to start working out why it's not redirecting. It won't affect anyone if you re-apply the redirection.

You got the server handing out DHCP and serving DNS?

yeah thats where i'm checking, and its redirecting. i have now disabled it, and and re-enabled it and i'll see what happens when everybody has logged off and back on.

As for the DHCP and serviing DNS, i'm not excatly sure, how can i find this out? and what am i looking for? (told you i was a newbie)

Thanks in advance

Re: SBS 2003 Help

Start, all programmes, Administrative Tools, DHCP and SStart, all programmes, Administrative Tools, DNS.

Just get one person logging off and back on; Once its working for one person, everything else should start falling into place nicely. Check application event logs for errors, post em up if you need help translating them. Right clicking the my docs folder and selecting properties should show the target as \\<servername>\users\%username%
