Will Win XP recognize new Mobo?

I have a Mobo that has died, and the HD and everything else is still fine. Assuming I can get a new Mobo and re-use a lot of the stuff already in the case (maybe not), will the copy of Win XP currently on the old HD, boot up and acquire all the new info and parameters of the new mobo? Or does a complete fresh install of Win XP have to be performed? I would imagine old mobo stuff in stored in the registry? Might be a stupid question.

Win XP Home, SP3 all updates before it crashed. Two IDE HD, ATI AGP 8x Video, Gig Lan. Died = Asus P4S8X with 2Gb RAM.

It's always best to do a clean rebuild when you have a new motherboard unless you have exactly the same make, model and revision of board as your old one.
I have heard of people just swapping to a new board, installing the relevant drivers and Windows working ok but it doesn't often work and besides it's good to have a freshly built system every so often.

Re: Will Win XP recognize new Mobo?

I've done a swap from a ati chipset mobo to a nvidia chipset mobo (to check if the new board is working), it works but in the long run the system seems to run slow due to the number amount of drivers unused.

    And our survey says? X

Basically, windows has a bunch of lowest common denominator drivers that are installed always.

So long as the kernel can get itself into the situation where it looks for new/changed hardware, you can do it in in XP/Vista. Fact is Vista is much more likely to be able to do this without a problem because it knows how to talk to more of the newer hardware from a defeault install.

However its really not the best idea to do it this way, a clean install is much better/

also, no-one's mentioned that an OEM install of Windows binds itself to your motherboard and you will have to ring MS to get them to allow you to change the code to the new motherboard and this will also require a new install.

Re: Will Win XP recognize new Mobo?

I had a motherboard fail on me and installed a new one, I was just about to re-install XP and was about to check in the BIOS first to make sure everything was ok, funny thing was, I didn't press the right button in time, so it ended up booting into XP - I decided to wait for a laugh, as I was intending to reinstall anyway, but after a few minutes and numerous boxes popping up, it seemed alright. I checked for old drivers and they didn't seem to exist, so I just installed the new chipset drivers for the new board, and then graphics, DX etc, and have been using it ever since! It hasn;t felt any slower than it was before, and I didn't end up with any driver errors. Of course, I probably just got lucky, but it's worth a try first. It saved me having to reinstall loads of other applications, so was very handy for me.
