Anything to note when using nlite and vlite?

    Hey guys,
Basically just having a look at dual booting XP and vista (I feel like playing around with it now!) and upon using the respective programs and removing lots of things, a few questions have arised.
(Yea I should have used nLite agessss ago!)

Firstly, when using vLite, you have to have WAIK installed in order to use the WIM format for creating the ISO, as running vLite on XP requires you to download and install this.
(Im assuming vista already has this installed)

EDIT: Upon writing this post I think Ive just found a work around.

Next, can you use vlite without effecting the boot loader vista creates?

Will removing the languages and other such things you dont use, effect installs later down the line?
Things like removing WMP all together (I never use this), outlook etc.

Just want some experiences really, and info on what you shouldnt remove even if you dont think you use it.

I haven't touched vLite properly yet.

    Thanks

problem with doing this (not that ive actually gone through and used my nlited xp is that in the future some programs rely on other programs and removing them will mean lots of problems.

also removing certain things has absolutly no effect on perfomance supposedly. have a read about should be some good guides out!

Re: Anything to note when using nlite and vlite?

nLite has brief descriptions listed for most parts in the various sections.

As becomes more clear in the services section, lots of things affect sections you might not think of.

Basically, if you don't know what it is, leave it alone, as there's normally no way of reversing it other than a reinstall.

Before you go anywhere near using it properly, test it out thoroughly in a virtual machine (VirtualBox and Virtual PC are both free to use, at least non-commercially) with the software you usually use.

Until last year, I'd only ever used nLite for adding drivers to a CD. When we bought netbooks for our year 8 kids, that had to change, as there's no way XP is running on the appalling SSDs on Acer Aspire Ones without hacking the OS to bits and stripping out everything not needed... and then some.

I've always said I'd not use nLite's chopping features for anything at work, and apart from the advent of netbooks, I'll stick by that. And if it's not good enough for work, it's not good enough for home. How can I know what I'll need in 6 months time?

Echo whats been said, I use it more to add stuff in than remove stuff. XP is so quick anyway on modern hardware, whats the point. Some stuff can be put back in later if needed, but thats a tonne of messing about. Saying that, my XP has most of the accessories and random rubbish stripped out, games are gone, added in a nice theme, tweaks I like, drivers including SATA ones and an unattended install.

Wouldnt touch things like IE or WMP, as nearly everything seems to require you have them installed these days. MSN needs IE and 4OD requires WMP for starters.

Deffo worthwhile spending some time going through Vista though. By the time I was done, install time was sooooooo much quicker and seemed to run a bit better too. Still went back to trusty old XP, mind.

THat would be very handy to know, do report back

All I would be doing is removing all that random crap that sits in your accessories on the start menu and other random rubbish in the program files folder which I never use!
But yea, it seems logical to leave in IE and WMP when you just dont actually know what uses it.

I've just whacked on a drive image of a fresh install of XP - but I know I'll be formatting again soon. (by which then I will have time to play about with vista and do a dual boot)

On a side note, say if the drive image I have is of a partition that is 58gb and I want to put it onto a drive/partition thats bigger, would there be a problem?

I don't think there should.. aslong as you use a trusted program not some opensource prebeta software.
