Lightbulb C# and C++ Tutorial Help

Hi for the past 4 years I have been programming is AS2 and I am now starting on AS3. I have had 3 successful web titles all sponsored:

    MaxGames.com "Toast Game": $150/£75 (http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/371120)

    MoFunZone.com "Blocks": $400/£200 (http://www.mofunzone.com/online_games/blocks.shtml)

    DABonTV.com "EvoCannon": $600/£300 (http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/439683)

I have been quite pleased with these results and after I have completed my A Levels I'm hoping to go to Qantm College (http://www.qantm.co.uk/news/index.php) and do a Diploma and Degree in either Web Development or Game Development.

Because of this I want to learn C# and C++, and the way I learnt AS2/3 is through the use of tutorials on the internet. Unfortunately I can not find any so I would much appreciate it if someone could link me to some useful resources.

For C#, there's a number of VTMs on Microsoft's site, and for C++, everything you need to get started is here.

Buy a couple of books. £20 each is f-all to pay for a lot of useful knowledge. Cplusplus.com is a handy site, but not a replacement for a good book or two IMO.

I find that even 'a good book' fails to demonstrate concepts until you actually try them. Cplusplus.com gives you the knowledge you need to get started, as well as providing a useful reference even when you are handy with the language.

And this is a flaw that cplusplus.com doesn't have?!

Yes, you obviously have to practice.

cplusplus.com is a good site, and I agree that it's useful even when you're competent at the langauge, but I still don't think it's a replacement for a good well-structured tutorial book.

The few programming books I've bought in my time are some of the best investments I've ever made, considering what I get paid to do now.

Re: C# and C++ Tutorial Help

It really depends, books often are hit or miss depending on the style of the author.

For many technologies i spend lots of money on books, some of them are really quite bad. Then again i'm lucky enough to manage my own budget on such things, I ended up buying 4 books on WPF. I wouldn't really recommend any of them.

With programming the best thing you can do is to get your hands dirty, and online tutorials are available as your at your PC anyway, so why not just use them?

I've yet to see a good reference book on C# thats a tutorial. If you want a good C# book, CLR via C# is a must have reference text.
