Do ATI's linux drivers still suck ?
Its the only reason im holding off from buying a 9800pro.
Any offers ?
Yes, they still suck, I install the drivers for my radeon 9000 under Fedora Core1 and the thing fails to find a display.
So, that means I have to use a standard driver with zero accelleration. Sucks!
I wish they'd open source them so that more people could sort the issues out. Some might say that'd give the wrong people access to certain information - but let's face it, Nvidia engineers will need more than closed source drivers to stop them working out how ATI implement their technologies.
The ATI drivers are rubbish, But they work, at least anyway.
nVidea is a better gamble
AMD Athlon XP 2400+ | Connect3D Radeon 9600PRO | Seagate Barrcuda 80GB HDD | 512mb PC2700 Crucial RAM | MSI KT6 Delta FIS2R | Zorro Silver Case | Windows XP/Gentoo Linux
I got the drivers working perfectly under Gentoo a little while ago. Wasn't too hard, just followed a guide on their forums. Managed to play UT2K3 under Linux (~70 fps).
Are they still working perfectly now? Ill be "attempting" to install gentoo in a couple of weeks and ive got a Rad 8500.
Not technically they dont, no. I havn't got it linux installed anymore, but it worked right up to when i accidently overwrote the xfree86 config file
