Need OS for 10 year old Laptop

My Dad gave me his old IBM 380XD, its a real brick

Its got the Max RAM of 96mb & a 3gb HDD and currently has Win98 installed

What I want to do is install a Linux OS and a 802.11b/g wireless card so my Nephew can use it to surf. I want Linux as it'll not be possible to run a modern windows antivirus on such a crappy machine

Anyone got a suggestions for a easily installable/usable OS that can run on 96mb RAM (Not DSL as I don't like the look of it), would one of the older Ubuntu distros be a good idea?

Would a wireless PCMCIA work with this old thing?

Even current fluxbuntu should be ok. There's also puppy, which is another very lightweight distro.

Although Xubuntu only requires 64MB at install time, you actually need 192MB for it to run.

I had personally run Windows 2000 on plenty of machines with only 128MB, so i'm sure 96MB would be possible (although you'd clearly need a licence).

But i'd agree that a Linux option would be better.

Although i've no personal experience, how about Zenwalk?

I tried to install Ubuntu on a PC that has about twice that spec. and it told me that the BIOS had to be later than 1999 - I couldn't find an update.
I put XP Pro for a laugh and it ran sort of.

I doubt it can take a modern 32bit PCMCIA card.

I think its not really worth the effort, I am sure you could get one off ebay for a few quid that can do what you want.
