    Windows 7 and domains

I decided to install Windows 7 today on my work machine (I figure work is a good place to really test things like this) and have just found out that I cannot connect to my domain.

Upon a quick google it turns out that there is a bug in Windows 7 that means it cannot cope with a fully qualified domain name over 15 characters, ours being 16 leaves me a little bit stuck.

There is apparently a fix but at the moment it is only available to those who have been invited to the private beta on Microsoft connect. Is anyone here one of those people and if so is there a chance of getting the hotfix?

Either that or has anyone got the same problem and found a way around it (which I very much doubt).

Oh and I tried using the NetBIOS name but that didn't work (didn't really expect it to really).

It's only the first part of your domain that the limit is on, but I'd guess that you're SOL and will prolly end up recovering from backup

The first part of our FQDN is 16 characters though. Hopefully in the next 2 days the hotfix will be publicly available.

    Re: Windows 7 and domains

Your post was the only one with any hint to the issue. I am unable to post the url, but the hotfix can be probably found by searching for kb 961402.

    The title is:
You cannot join a Windows 7 Beta-based or a Windows Server 2008 R2 Beta-based computer to an existing domain, and you receive an error message: "The parameter is incorrect"

    It worked perfectly.

    Cheers,
    Tim.
