    Windows 7

Ok, so, whens the final of this out cos me for one soooooo prefer this to Vista and Vista's final, wonder how much of an effect on Vista sales this is gonna have.
Sp3 for XP probably didnt help Vista, now Windows7 is public beta and altho I've only got it on my work laptop it just feels nicer than Vista, so, what was the point of Vista, they should of released it as a Windows7 preview instead of trying to rip off users with lots of versions and stupid retail prices, all in all Vista's not done any favours for MS...

Windows 7 will be no different as MS have already hinted at the same versions as vista with the home premiums, enterprise and business and ultimate editions for Windows 7. Let's just hope they drop the prices a little over vista.

Personally I see Windows 7 as a waste of time for me as Vista Ultimate x64 is 100% solid for myself and as the PC is for gaming and DX11 coming to Vista, Windows 7 would be a waste of money for me.

2 words for you - Software Assurance.

Windows 7 *is* looking promising, but I'd say that a good portion of the *problems* that Vista has had can be laid at the feet of a small number of XP/Apple/Linux fanbois who may have installed it for a couple of days and just decided that they didn't like change. Of course this is just my opinion, but it happens to be correct.

How are you finding network copies anyhoo Trig? I seem to recall that you had major issues with the new network stack in Vista and still were, so it would be most interesting to see how W7 performs (especially if you're able to do a side by side comparison on the same hardware/network setup).

As for gold release date? I'm not holding my breath. This beta is allegedly feature complete (though that may have been something i read somewhere like The Register or The Inq, rather than a credible news source), but theres still an RC to come, then the launch to the corporates which will come before you can pick a copy up from the shelf. Maybe late this year/early next year is my guess.

Yeah SA is my friend too...
We'll skip over the Vista problems as we've been there before
Network wise, I've not done a massive amount of copying data over the network with the laptop yet as I only installed yesterday but it is one of the things on my list of things to check..

The fact that W7 is public beta just smells a bit off to me as regards to Vista, its not been out long and the fact there already looking at something else just says Vista was either a rushed out early "beta" of what W7 is going to be in responce to something or other that and it wasnt ready....

Personally i find windows 7 is more polished and intuitive compared to Vista. It's what Vista should of been going of 1st impressions. That said the changes should not constitute a new OS, it's barely even a service pack. M$ cashing in once again.

Vista was ready, but wasn't well received, largely due to mixed messages relating to hardware requirements and not helped by various Intel pushings. Windows 7 isn't a huge step forwards, just refining things, but the break basically addresses the largest problems of how Vista was received - computers are more powerful now, and performance on certain types of computer should be in line with expectations.

    1. Tick tock development cycles
    2. Apply release a new OS far mroe regularly than MS and charge for the priveledge of what MS would release as service packs
    3. It's a new OS if MS want to call it a new OS
    4. They are a profit making company, it is their legal obligation to their shareholders to make mney

This has been covered many times, do we really need to go there again?

    Please god no.

OS argument threads are maximally tedious.

    Re: Windows 7

I am sure I read somewhere that Microsoft were wanting to get back a 3 - 5 year cycle for the OS side of things so 7 from Vista would fit into this and we will have to wait and see what comes after 7, if it is Azure for cloud computing or if there will be another windows version before MS completely move to cloud computing and pay to use services. All speculation of course.

    Re: Windows 7

Having used windows 2000 and then xp for a good long time (heck I had them dual booting for a while to compair) I'm seeing the vista vs w7 in a very simular light.
From an end user point of view not a vast deal has changed, it's only when you dig deeper into the os you find the bigger changes. eg new kernal

Now granted the situation is not exactly the same win2k was never a major release product, if anything win2k was a stepping stone os, it let drivers and software to be more compatible when xp came out because most of it was already out for win2k.
the main difference here is that ms did a massive push behind vista.

    hahaha

I have to agree with you to be honest, and regarding features - microsoft have promised more to come, although that could be under the hood changes no one notices.
