    vista cant detect PATA/IDE hdd's

    Hi. i have a ASUS P6T Delux mobo along with a i7 920, 260gtx card, a seasonic 600w module psu, 1 sata hdd and 2 IDE HDD's and 3gb.

my issue is that windows vista ultimate edition 64bit cannot detect any of of the two IDE/PATA seagate hdd's i have installed on it.

i have checked the bios and under the "hard drive boot sequence" it detects all of my hdd's but under vista, only the sata HDD i have is detected succesfuly.

i tried going into disk management from vista but it still doesnt see either of those hdd's.

    thanks in advance

Re: vista cant detect PATA/IDE hdd's

You need to change something in your bios settings. I had a similar problem with an IDE DVD drive in vista with my P5K. I will look through my bios and try to remember what the setting is called!

May sound a bit simple, but someone's got to ask it. Have you installed the JMicron drivers?

Are there any devices missing drivers or marked as not working correctly in Device Manager?

nope there is no device drivers missing. i just went into add new hardware and scanned for new devices and nothing came up

i will go search for JMicron drivers but i have installed everything from the asus p6t setup disk. its bizare that vista doesnt work for IDE straight out of the box xp works fine. i dont even have to install any IDE/PATA drivers. infact i diddnt know such things existed

What mode is your SATA controller set to in the BIOS? (I don't have a P6T, so I'm not familar with the BIOS, but I had a similar issue with my old P5B Deluxe Wifi if the SATA controller was set to AHCI)

Re: vista cant detect PATA/IDE hdd's

its set to IDE. well after abit of experimenting and tweeking, i managed to get it to work but only one HDD

what i did was to first update my bios and instantly, vista recognised one of my pata hdd's

i then tried setting jumpers, checking the wires again etc and still only one hdd worked(sometimes).

i then changed my IDE cable and the other one started to work whilst the other one diddnt again i checked all cables etc and still no joy.

im guessing both of my IDE cables are messed up or vista can only identify and use one IDE so what i did was just take one of them out and put it inside an external enclosure.

a shame really that i cant use both. i have only been using vista for two days and it has given me a few problems already.

i had to reinstall and format my sata hdd twice for vista because the first time round, whilst installing my drivers, i got a BSOD and could never load vista after that :S

i am willing to give vista real go this time before bashing it but if after a couple of weeks use it gives me lots of problems, then im afraid i can and have every right to say vista does truly suck and will be going back to xp and windows 7(apparently its xp + vista).

im only trying vista because its 64bit(xp 64bit sucks i heard) and it has dx10

Re: vista cant detect PATA/IDE hdd's

If it's what I'm thinking it's less that Vista sucks and more that the crappy emulated IDE controller on the boards that's the issue. I've not used an IDE drive in a few years now, but obviously that's not the case with everyone.

yea it could be. after all, IDE is a ageing old connector thats being slowly being thrown out of the window. i wont be surpised if the next next intel gen mobo's wont have any IDE connectors on them!

seems like im 1 in 100 people that use IDE's.

have you tried installing the intel chipset and the marvell drivers?

also did you disable anything in bios? i made a mistake of disabling pata by accident.

Sounds like the master/slave/cable select jumpers haven't been set correctly.

Try one as master and one as slave. I've always found CS to be... flaky.
