    System Restore oddity

    Hi

I have been asked to take a look at a PC (few years old) which has a couple of problems:

1). System Restore doesn't work at all. When accessing it and trying to create restore point the message "System Restore is not able to create a restore point. Please restart the computer, and then run system restore again"

2). PC in standby beeps every few mins.

I have performed chkdsk which fixed a few errors but no System Restore and no historical restore points are present to go back to.

    Any ideas?

What does the event log say with regards to attempts to use System Restore?

Some malware deliberatly disable system restore (as well as antivirus and firewall), saying that this is the case with your friends pc.

You can get free months use from many of the reputable firm,it maybe worth trying even if the pc has av installed anyway.

    Re: System Restore oddity

From what I recall, srservice started when I disable/enable it. No errors reported.

I suspected foul play when he said the security centre wasn't available but it is for me.

He has told me that it may have come from his starting to use Outlook Express (with auto opening) from an email but don't know for sure.

A complete reinstall is what I would do since he hasn't done this for years since buying the PC and we all know how Windows likes a freshen up every year or less.

He carried out full AVG 8 scan and nothing showed for him.

    Thanks

Yes, go for a re-install and he will notice how much snappier his pc runs (until a few months down the line).
