Auto Connect to a VPN on a host
Hello experts,
Due to my company downsizing a little due to something to do with Crunchy bars i am now having to work from home two days a week.
A VPN has been set up. What i want to do is only use the VPN connection for connections to a specific domain i.e *.mybusiness.com. On any other domain i want to use my own internet connection. I want it to auto disconnect once the transaction is complete also :)
Does anybody know how to do this in Vista 64?
Thanks in advance, please ask questions if you need more detail. :juggle:
Re: Auto Connect to a VPN on a host
depends on the VPN software.
What you want to do is whats called split tunnelling and is generally frowned upon by many network admins.
ie you only use the VPN to route to IP's on the remote network , everythign else would use your local default gateway.
I wouldn't recommend it , just have a machine for work and another one for browsing etc.

Thanks for the reply Moby-Dick, i am just using the Windows dial-up style VPN connection. You know the one that you follow the Windows wizard and say 'connect to a workplace VPN' (or similar). It creates a virtual connection in the Connections - along side my LAN adapter. ATM i am just using Vista's right click on Network icon -> connect to network -> "My Work VPN".
Is this feasible?: http://rsivanandan.wordpress.com/200...-split-tunnel/
What are the security issues with this?

Not an expert here at all, but could Hamachi be useful?

That certinaly is the way to enable split tunnelling on the connection , although it may well violate your companies security policy.
from a security point of view , you want to be able to control the data coming into your network , by having a split tunnel ( to allow browsing without a proxy server for example ) you might be able to contract malware , which could then get into the work network via your laptop. similarly if your machine was already compriminsed , then remote control could be taken via the web and straight onto your work LAN.

Hamachi essentialy is VPN software already so its not really quite greared for this.

Cool Thanks, I will contact my sys admin and ask, i leave all Vista's security stuff on including the maximum level UAC, so malware infestation is unlikly, i am also behind a hardware firewall (on router), and Vista firewall, i run AVG Free as well. Perhaps these measures are sufficient.
All i will be using the VPN for is to sync to SVN and update my Trac tickets, also maybe some access to my My Documents on my remote work PC (which is a shared folder). I guess i could set up the VPN Connection to auto connect when used, and disconnect after 2 mins of inactivity... all of which used to be possible in Windows ME (ha ha), so i guess is still there in Vista.
I will have to check the settings when i am at home. Thanks for info!
