recommend a text editor for windows?

Ok i am getting tired of using Notepad and I'm looking for a new text editor.

My main goal, however, is to find a text editor that meets these two requirements:

    • For windows
    • The search is in the toolbar and it doesnt get in the way of the text:

    (screenshot of Firefox's CTRL+F)

I tried Notepad2 and Notepad++ but they dont have this kind of Find. I hear Notepad++ is extensible but I have not had any luck finding an extension for it.

    Thank you

I`ve used context before. its aimed at coding more but I think it comes with a search function built in.

I like notepad++ - but the search is a bit of a pain... although very fast and powerful.

I am quite fond of jEdit.

Its aimed more at programmers but is platform independent and customisable.
It was co-written by one of our university lecturers.

Seems a bit of a strange request! You can set the transparency of the search box in notepad++, and the later versions have word highlight highlighting (just highlight a word and it will highlight all other occurrences of that word in the document). Not to mention the search tool is quite powerful, and fast, and the find in files feature is handy as ever.
To err is human. To really foul things up ... you need a computer.

I quite agree. Very useful. But the search isn't in the toolbar.

I use metapad as it seems to keep cross platform formatting where as notepad doesn't. Unfortunately it doesn't have the search in the toolbar either though.

Re: recommend a text editor for windows?

    Hi Latrosicarius,

I think I have found one you might like to use.

UltraEdit (sorry not allowed to post a URL yet, this is only my first post since joining) I have just downloaded the latest trial (45 days) 14.20.1.1008 from their site a short while ago to confirm. Its an excellent featured program which I have been using for a number years, plenty of options to play with.

There is a quick search drop down control on the main tool bar with search button, search next and search previous buttons. You simply type the word you want and click on the search button to perform a search.

Also, If you press Ctrl-F you get the usual popup seach box, which can give you extra options.

    Is fills both you criteria

    * For windows
    * The search is in the toolbar and it doesnt get in the way of the text

  14. Received thanks from:

A good, powerful text editor is worth thousands of pounds, luckily, gViM is free. Seriously though, it fulfils all the OPs requirements, it runs of Windows, and it has a '/' search-from-bottom feature.
