Which UNIX or Linux with Vista dual-boot?

Firstly, is it easy to install a copy of UNIX or Linux with Vista 64-bit? I have a 1TB drive in my system now so space shouldn't be an issue. I have partitioned it into two 500GB drives. What I would like to do is repartition the second partitions into two partitions: 300GB and 200GB and use the 200GB partition for Linux (or UNIX). I assume that 200GB is plenty of disk space for Linux.

Assuming that is reasonably easy to do, which version of (free) Linux or UNIX would you guys recommend? I am increasingly encountering Redhat Linux and Solaris at work so would prefer one of these if they are free. I understand that Fedora is essentially Redhat and is free. Also, do Sun do a free version of Solaris and would that be a better option than Linux?

Re: Which UNIX or Linux with Vista dual-boot?

you can use grub as a boot loader, most distros come with grub on the disc image any way.

i'm sure directhex will be along soon as this is his sort of terratory

but personally i use ubuntu or debian (normally with xfce or kde as a frontend - i can't stand gnome)

i would reccomend ubuntu if it is your first delve into linux mainly due to the shear amount of ubuntu help forums there are

edit: having reread your post and seeing that you want something like redhat - freebsd or fedora, i think may be options to consider (fedora is quite nice to use)

    You want Linux, not UNIX

Ubuntu is the newbie distribution. I'm loving it so far - Just make sure you use Google a lot

Can't comment on Redhat Linux and Solaris. Last time I used Redhat it was on 6.2, and that relationship lasted about a day

Depends on what you're doing. Red Hat (RHEL) isn't free, CentOS is a free version whch lacks official support and updates, Fedora is the development version and its features end up in RHEL and in turn CentOS. Solaris isn't free either but there's OpenSolaris (Suns release is Solaris Express) which is based on the next version of Solaris.

Re: Which UNIX or Linux with Vista dual-boot?

there are opensolaris distributions if you badly want a solaris kernel (i've used nexenta at work), and solaris 10 itself is a free download too if you're masochistic

on the linux front, the best way to get the "enterprise experience" for free is with a rhel clone like centos - for something pleasant to use, try ubuntu

I also would use Ubuntu its very easy to setup and run. OpenSuse is also quite user friendly. If I was you I would mess with them in VM before goig for the full install.

Just to clarify, CentOS does have updates - it's essentially a free Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) clone without official Red Hat support. Updates for CentOS are typically released 1-2 days after Red Hat releases them.

The main advantage of an Enterprise Linux distribution, such as CentOS, besides the obvious stability is long term support. RHEL, and hence CentOS are supported for 7 years whereas most distros like Fedora etc are only supported for 12-18 months with new versions every 6 months (Ubuntu does have a long term service release that's supported for 3 years).

After a while, the constant upgrading every 6 months of a cutting edge distro gets a little tiring.

I 100% agree. I eneded up buying redhat for a mail server, it was worth it.

the old adage goes something like this:

    managers buy RHEL.
    sysadmins run debian.

Of course - you don't have to upgrade every time a new release comes out! I am using FC 6 - next upgrade will be probably to FC-9 in about 6 to 12 months. At the moment it is doing what I want - so why change?

if security support is dropped, there's a good reason

For home use i would definitly go the Linux route. Best to leave Solaris to UltraSPARC setups, found Intel based installs to be a pain in the bum previously (although this was way back at 2.6 revision) Have a Old Ultra 10 knocking around here at home which i have kept for old times sake

But like other people have said Linux is increasingly becoming very user friendly for home set ups - dual booting etc. So many flavours to choose from, and i would just say try them all. Been using Suse for around 6 years now, because of work - so is my personal fav. Although now dabbling more and more with Red Hat Enterprise. Ubuntu is also increasing in popularity and from what i have seen is doing the job

Once you have decided on Distribution you just have to decide what front end you prefer Gnome/Kde etc etc... the choices just go on

    Thanks, all, for the advice.

I have downloaded Ubuntu (the ISO file) and am going to bite the bullet and install it after I burn it to a CD. The question is, I need to shrink my Vista D: drive (which is currently 500GB) in order to have a partition to install Ubuntu on. So, what size of partition would I need? Iwas thinking of 100GB. Is this too little or too much?

Of course it depends on what you want to use it for, but that's way more than enough. Most of my Linux systems are installed on 80GB HDs, and a base install probably takes less than 5GB, even with a GUI desktop and big stuff like OpenOffice.

Just leave the free space as unpartitioned space, and allow the Linux installer to partition it as it see's fit.

or let the installer do the resize, if you want (though it's nice that vista can do it now, xp couldn't)
