    Cleaning up PC

I'm going through a stage of cleaning up my pc and am wondering what the best programs are for defragging and registry clean up.

I really just want free ones to use which i will uninstall once i've finished and just install when i need them.

    Anybody got any reccomendations.

also what are the registry defrag programmes i've heard of.

    Thanks in advance

CCleaner and Defraggler. Freeware, small and simple, just gets the job done.

I'll admit HEXUS folks know a lot, but I'm willing to bet no one has any idea of the answer to this

Well, maybe not - the following does defrag the registry (XP Only)

    Crosshair VIII Hero (WIFI), 3900x, 32GB DDR4, Many SSDs, EVGA FTW3 3090, Ethoo 719

IMHO, leave the registry alone...messing with it is not going to improve performance, and there is actually the risk that it might corrupt windows.

For disk defrag, I use (and recommend) Diskeeper 2009 Pro. Free trialware versions can be downloaded from http://www.diskeeper.com and will work for upto a month. Diskeeper is fast, thorough (defrags system files too) and best of all- fully automatic.

Apart from defrag, as part of my PC cleanup routine, I also run virus and malware scans with AVG, Spybot and Malwarebytes.

For disk cleanup, I use CCleaner or the built in windows tool.

    Re: Cleaning up PC

I've yet to see hard evidence that any 3rd-party defraggers result in a perceptible performance increase compared with Vista's own built-in tools - that means benchmarks under proper control conditions, not the placebo-effect "it feels snappier" etc.

However, as Executive Software (producers of Diskeeper) are a front organisation for the Church of Scientology, at least you'll be doing your bit to keep Xenu the Galactic Tyrant at bay...

Not sure that this is strictly neccessary.

I don't chuck my hoover out after I 've had a good clean up, I keep it under the stairs because it is easy to get to. This way it gets used frequently and prevents my home from becoming a sh**hole.

Seriously though, Ccleaner is hardly a resource hog - it takes up about 1.5MB of disk space on my machine. You can use it regularly to keep the windows clutter down and increase the time between major overhauls (or reinstalls which tbh are not a problem if you have a good system for backing up).

If you uninstall and reinstall a lot of software on a regular basis you are more likely to experience registry corruption. I often run Ccleaner through the registry after uninstalling stuff, and it ususally finds scraps that the unistallers have missed. Ccleaner will save these changes and can easily restore them later in case of problems down the line. In about 3 years of use I have not have any stability problems.

You can also reduce the effects of disk fragmentation with a sensible partitioning strategy.
