Strange error when trying to open a .pdf file

The family laptop keeps throwing a "Exception has been thrown by the target of an invocation" error at me whenever I try to open a pdf, strange thing is it only happens when you use the family account, it works fine when I log into the administrator account. Can anyone shed any light on whats going on for me? Tried google but most of the links were either way over my head or just useless.

Is it just adobe reader you're using? When you installed it did you just only select one user to use the program or did you tick "all users" ???

1st option I always try for small programs is the simple, uninstall and reinstall malarky
[If that doesnt work try installing it using the family account instead]

User-specific and any PDF? Nuke the Adobe folder in the Application Data folder.

Then try a repair install of Adobe [Reader|Acrobat].

Or, use Process Monitor from sysinternals/microsoft to see what it does when it brings up the error.

Re: Strange error when trying to open a .pdf file

Looking at google it appears to be something to do with .NET Framework, try reinstalling it.

    support.microsoft.com/kb/328560 (can't post an url)

Though I'd suggest you use something like Sumatra PDF if you simply need to view PDF files.

Re: Strange error when trying to open a .pdf file

If it's a .net problem, I've heard some reports of problems caused by this recent update:
Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 and .NET Framework 3.5 Family Update (KB951847) x86

It's labelled as a high priority on Windows Update. You could try uninstalling it, if nothing else works.

Re: Strange error when trying to open a .pdf file

    Hi,

Looking around various sites talking about this message, it does look like a .net problem. Most developers answering the questions indicate that its being thrown by code which should be expecting something after call but nothing it returned... and no exception handling locally, so a generic message is thrown further up the chain.

.Net framework update might help... and so might using a different version of the app, or see if any update for the app exists.

Hope this helps in some way

Re: Strange error when trying to open a .pdf file

Sorry, this wont help with your current problem per se, but if you just want to read PDF docs, then Foxit Reader is a cracking piece of software. It's not bloatware like Adobe's offerings and opens doc's quickly.
