    Biggest missing Windows feature?

I'm torn between two at the moment:

1)Proper codec management out of the box. There should be no need for something like FFDShow really. There should be an option in control panel that allows total control over which codecs are installed and used.

2)Program updating - There has been no change in this since Windows 95. Each program still has its own update methods. Ubuntu puts Windows to shame in this area.

Hmm, both very good, i would like to add something like Multiple desktops and a cube (plus other effects), as they are tres handy when you have alot of windows, but programs that do it for windows are tres expensive or just plain pap

But probably the program updating... It just makes a security hellhole the way it is ATM...

These two, plus extend 2 to include full package management on top of package updates, and significantly tighter permissions and software design requirements to suppliment tighter permissions. A decent IRC client wouldn't hurt either.

Out of those, however, I'd say real package management would be the highest on the priority list.

    Re: Biggest missing Windows feature?

i think Windows is missing a proper audio recorder and wav editor.

I'm sure Win 95 or 98 used to have one, but the one built into XP is cack. I mean, Moviemaker is excellent and that's free, so why not a good audio recorder.

    Re: Biggest missing Windows feature?

Both good points Agent, although I'd wonder if the first one should even be necessary. It is, but normal users shouldn't have to worry about it. At least if the options are there, it's nice for those who would use them to have them to hand. It's nice enough that Windows 7 provides support for a shedload of codecs without having to hunt for malware filled codecpacks and other random programs.

IRC Client though? Some things are best left with 3rd parties, and MS's previous attempts at an IRC client have been bloody awful. But I could be just saying that as I don't want to have to support yet another crap IRC client from Quakenet's point of view - handling mIRC and cack like Chatzilla is bad enough as it is!

Other than that, I could only think about updates to existing features to make them work rather than anything outright missing - i.e. Windows Defender should actually defend Windows against something. Live! gaming would probably be a welcome addition to the high end versions of Windows, but that sort of thing (and much else) would probably have people waving their Anti-Trust lawsuits at MS
    Moo.

I didn't nessecerily mean Microsoft should support it. There's just a rediculous lack of good quality IRC clients on Windows.

A backup utility would save many users a lot of grief. Even a simple one would be better than nothing.

The new codecs are a prime example though. They offer basic support for most file deciding, but if I install a later version of DivX there should be something in control panel saying "This is the default for DivX content" with the options of choosing any decoder installed on the system.

    Re: Biggest missing Windows feature?

By default its really nicely integrated into windows 7, in much the same way as Previous Versions is when you've got the thingy service running.

Codec management is a pain to be lacking a simple GUI for, this has actually gotten worse, because the old multimedia management thing is gone now. Retards.

IRC who really gives a toss about that now-adays? Its really just for geeks + pedo's.

Software/Package management. This is a hard one, MS would have to make a very flexible framework, so you've got full understanding of XBAP style apps, Click Once style, and regular Program Files kind.

Would be nice if there was a more rigid out of the box application configuration API. This would make it very transparent to a user, which set of configs (thing registry entries, ini + xml config files) the app is to use, and how to 'layer' them up from default settings + user settings.
