    Debian lenny

    Hello,
atm im running fedora and its working quite well. the problem is that i will need to reinstall it at least once a year. so im looking for a distro that i can keep installed for a long period of time.
I dont like the human theme from ubuntu plus the support cycle is still quite short.
I decided to try out debian lenny in a virtual machine.

I have a few questions and problems.

I downloaded opera .deb file from opera.com i right clicked it and opened with another application and choose the gdeb package installer (think thats what its called. prompted for password etc and installed.
I right clicked the file again and selected the gdeb package installer, a window popped up and told me what was going to be installed. I clicked on install and typed in my password.

i went to applications, internet and it wasnt there. so i added the deskbar applet to the top bar and searched opera and found it. so its installed but didnt add itself to the applications menu.
    what did i do wrong?

Other than howtoforge is there anyother decent guides to setting up debian as a desktop system with codec support (including dvd) as well as java, proper nvidia drivers, compiz fusion etc?

Can I mix standard debian stable packages and more unstable packages?
Lenny has gnome 2.22 i would like to use gnome 2.24 is this easy to do?
once alsa supports creative x-fi i would like to upgrade to that version of alsa is that easy to do?

Java and nVidia drivers are available in Debian. For Java, you can either install the OpenJDK packages or the Sun packages (in non-free). nVidia drivers are also available in non-free, and should be installing using module assistant e.g.

    m-a a-i prepare
    m-a a-i nvidia

Codecs can be gotten from the Debian Multimedia repositories.

Yes. I run Lenny, but have a couple of packages from other sources. You'll want to look into APT pinning to make sure that you install more packages from Lenny, and only specific ones from other repositories.
