    Windows 7 ISO question

Just a quick question as this seems like a group of people that have already done this.

I've downloaded the Windows 7 ISO image from Microsoft's website (twice) and am trying to burn ir onto a DVD-R using ImgBurn.

The DVD seems to burn fine, but when it verify's it I get an error about Track 1 blocks not being the same size as on the image. I've tried this 3 times and always get the same error.

When I put the DVD into my normal DVD (not writer) drive it boots straight up with the "Install Windows 7" prompt exactly as you would hope (I don't explore any further). However if I put the DVD in the DVD-Writer drive then it treats it like a blank disk!

Anyone seen this behaviour before, do you think the disk has written correctly ? I need to make sure I have a good copy for Saturday as that's when the new PC arrives.

    Thanks for any help.

Are you burning the disk above 2x or 4x speed? If so try at one of these slow speeds to ensure a good burn. Also are the writeable DVD's of a good quality, such as Verbatim disks. I have similar issues with all sorts of stuff on lower quality generic disks. Especially in older drives. As a last resort you could try updating the firmware on your DVD writer to the newest version to ensure you have support for newer media types. A good place to find these is here: http://forum.rpc1.org/portal.php

    Re: Windows 7 ISO question

Thanks - I'll try these suggestions.

My DVD's are undoubtedly cheap ones and perhaps a little old too (just ordered some more with new Scan PC) but I've never had any issues writing to them before (photo's, archiving / etc).

They state 8x on the box, but the software is only picking up 2x or 4x and is trying to write at 4. So the first thing I will do is slow things down.

I have a tsstcorp sh-s182d DVD Writer and a search of Samsungs website appears to have firmware updates that do not mention Vista compatibility. So perhaps I'm stuck until my new Scan PC arrives and then I can try using that and new media to write the DVD.

That's on the basis that Scan's PC comes with a short-term Vista install. Otherwise I'm stuffed

    Re: Windows 7 ISO question

get yourself a USB stick 4GB or over, install it from that (google for guide, need to get boot file to usb), it's easy and well quick and no more wasted disks

    Re: Windows 7 ISO question

Well disks are cheap and I don't really use them for anything else.

Interesting idea though and instructions here http://blogs.technet.com/aviraj/arch...umb-drive.aspx

It does want you to copy from the DVD media, but I assume that I can somehow expand the ISO and copy from it ?

Then it relies on the SCAN pc booting from USB which it probably won't as I've asked them to turn unnecessary boot cr@p off so the PC boots faster

umm.. i wouldn't think a beta OS is really suitable for you in this case then

    Re: Windows 7 ISO question

Thanks for diagnosis of not being suitable for a beta programme because I haven't booted and installed an OS from a USB stick before.

Was simply hoping not to have to mess with the BIOS straight away after getting the new PC delivered.

I'll have a go at burning the DVD from the ISO using the new disks and writer in the new PC first and then I'll definitely use USB as a backup measure. May even try USB as first choice as it sounds fun and I'm interested to see how much faster the install is.

you would have to go into your bios anyway to turn the boot priority to your dvd drive from your hard drive in the case of them optimising your bios would you not

    Re: Windows 7 ISO question

With many modern motherboards, it's usually sufficant to hit F8 or F11 (or F12 in the case of my laptop) when you start up your computer to get a Boot Block Selection menu. From there you can just switch to your optical drive (or USB drive) and hit enter to start booting from alternative drives.

    Thanks. a good tip.

I mounted the ISO last night, setup the USB partition appropriately and copied the files across, so in theory I'm all ready to try it out.

    Re: Windows 7 ISO question

Just a thought - did you verify the ISO once you downloaded it? The SHA-1 is published on the Microsoft site, and if your download is corrupt it doesn't make any difference which medium you actually use to install from.

    Re: Windows 7 ISO question

I didn't "verify" the ISO download, but I did download it twice to make sure the 1st wasn't corrupt. Same problem with the 2nd download.

Also I can mount the ISO and copy all the files within with no issues, suggesting very strongly it is not corrupt.

All the guides I've seen state specifically to use FAT on the USB drive so that's what I used.

    Re: Windows 7 ISO question

I always verify the hash of an iso before burning it - it takes 10 seconds, which is a lot less time than downloading a second copy. That and the fact that there's no guarantee that just because you downloaded it twice and can extract data from the image it's not corrupt.
