For some unknown reason my PC has decided it hasnt enough virtual memory and my pagefile sits around just under 2 gb! Can't think for the life of me what's causing it!
Any ideas as to what the problem is or more importantly how to fix it?

512 MB PC 3200 DDR
MSI KT600 based board
Radeon 9600 Pro
XP Pro
Gotta be a software problem but I really can't work it out. None of the processes that are running are eating more memory than usual.
right click My computer > properties > advanced > performance settings > advanced > virtual memory [change]

I cant remember for sure (cos I am at work) but I think the only real difference is that my page file size is set to custom (cant remember the values).
Ill check when I get home.

Just because the file's that big it doesn't mean that it's all in use - Windows is probably just reserving that much for use if it needs it. Task manager will tell you how much is really in use. Oh and that's not 2GB it's 1.5GB... ;)
It was at 2gb at one stage smart arse :p
Was getting messages in the bottom right hand corner saying windows has run out of virtual memory so im pretty sure it was using it all...
Ne other ideas?
you tested your memory with something like Memtest?
Also, look in taskmanager - what's the commit charge values?
Agreed - a screen shot of the performance tab of task manager and the processes tab (re-size the window to show all of the processes running) would probably be helpful.Quote:

The defrag after setting the page file size will make a contiguous block of this file and it will not defrag badly afterwards as by setting the file size you are stopping it growing and shrinking as it feels like and thereby not fragmenting the drive as much and increasing performance.
