Any COM+ component experts here? I'm stuck!

    Hi guys.

A bit of a long shot, I know, but I'm trying to install a bespoke IT software system that uses some COM+ components. Essentially, I export a set of COM+ components as Application Proxies to allow remote clients to connect to a database via COM+.

However, whenever I try and install the exported application, I always get an error 1928 and the MSI fails to install. I've done a search on the net and MSKB where there are a few articles such as http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308940. But I don't think it's related to that.

The system I'm working on is being installed from scratch and I've created a new domain, joined all the boxes to it. I've tried everything I can think of including trying to install with a domain admin account but still no luck so I don't think it's a permissions problem.

Also interesting is that the exported components work fine on another set of PCs located on another domain! I also tried using another set of exported COM+ components - those which were used on that other domain and tried to install them on my current system, but same error message.

I've done some fairly drastic things such as wipe a dozen servers, fresh install of WS2003, freshly created new domain, etc, but no joy.

    Any ideas?

I would hazard a guess this is the post XP SP2 world of security. (or SP1 on win2k3).

First thing to check, can you run the Component Services MMC snap in on those machines?

If so then check the My Computer Properties inside the com services mmc snap in. Look at the security settings, msdtc (must be running) and the default properties (enabled dcom).
throw new ArgumentException (String, String, Exception)

    Yup, it's all Windows Server 2003 R2 SP2 and XP Pro SP2.

I can access the component service snap in OK. I've checked in Console root > Component services > Computers > My Computer. Right click, I can see Stop MS DTC so presume it's running OK.

If I go on the server where the COM+ component services are actually running, I can't even install the app proxy there.

Thanks Singh. I did come across that but it didn't make sense to me. I'm OK with it up to step 4 where it asks you to delete it (and then reinstall it in step 5). But I'm having trouble installing it in the first place!!!

Is it me or do MS just confuse people?
