Internet Security - Whats the best software out there?

Just taken a phone call from a friend whose just had his bank account hacked into. His bank has advised him that his internet banking facility has been withdrawn untill he can prove to them he's got some good security software on his laptops.

I have never ever known anybody get so many problems/scrapes with his Laptops like this guy, last month I was removing a route kit from his laptop because of too much porn. I'm sure thats what happening because I run a free, basic internet security package on my PC and I don't get anything like that.

He's got a modem router, granted he is only with BT, but I just don't understand why he gets all this hassle, although I suspect the porn sites are the cause of it all.

What payed software is everyone using these days (if any) and what combo of free software do you lot use ?

Re: Internet Security - Whats the best software out there?

Yes, I suspect the pr0n sites are the source of the problem. A particular problem I have seen is that many pr0n sites and especially spam, say that you need to download and install their video player in order to view some clip or other. Needless to say the installer installs malware at the same time, and the video clip (if there is one) is just DivX with a non-standard file extension.

Your friend will still be partly at fault though. Some people just click links and popups because they think they should, others are more paranoid and think first.

I use Kaspersky Internet security, which you can get from scan for about £15, or a 3 license pack for about £20.

Alternately, there is always Linux ? I can confirm that you can surf for pr0n under linux without difficulty, and it appears to be invulnerable to most malware attacks, (Though you can still get zillons of popups on some sites). Linux video players will play almost any real codec, though obvious not the fake ones.

    NOD32 Security Suite.

I use just the Anti Virus, but I guess for your mate it might be a good idea to go for the whole hog...

Re: Internet Security - Whats the best software out there?

Coincidentally i was looking into this the other night, i'm getting a bit fed up with AVG, it keeps pestering me to upgrade and that really ticks me off. I found this site. Bitdefender and ZoneAlarm come out at the top of the pile, perhaps worth a try.

Personally i'm reluctant to install the full security suite as they always seem to bog systems down more than they do good, but then i guess that depends on your level of knowledge when it comes to security. Common sence goes a long way.

Re: Internet Security - Whats the best software out there?

I was faithful to Zone Alarm for YEARS, but the new incarnation was, for me, a step too far. Can't recall why.

NOD has a teeny, tiny little footprint, doesn't slow you down at all, so you have plenty of system resources left for... well... porn.

Man, there's a recurrent theme here...

ZoneAlarm was a brilliant firewall back in the day - before it got bought out. Now it's just bloatware imo. Finally found Comodo after I decided to move from Sygate (another brilliant old school firewall).

So I wouldn't really recommend ZA now. AV wise it's gotta be Eset or Kaspersky.

The problem is, the guy in question knows very little. When it comes down to it he hasn't a clue.

As well as setting him up with a decent AV and firewall, you could also try making sure that for everyday use he logs on as an ordinary user with limited privileges (not with a root/admin account), and has UAC enabled and doesn't blindly click "yes" to everything. At the end of the day though I suspect you're beating your head against a brick wall, and one way or another he'll soon end up with a system full of malware again whatever you do or suggest.

I have a friend with similar online habits - I've given up trying to educate him, and resigned myself to the fact that I'll have to format his PC every 4-6 months or so (actually next time I do a clean install I'll just image the system partition in preparation for the next inevitable catastrophe).

As for online banking, it sounds like his bank have done him a favour by withdrawing the facility...

I was beging to think I was the only person who knew someone like this. Pretty much every 4 - 6 months I end up with his porn ridden laptops here, one of them oddly enough was my old one that I sold him just before christmas, and I've just had to pay for a new battery out of my own pocket for that one (although £33 isn't all that steep)

I've told him about firefox, I've told him not browse porn but it's like pushing porridge up a hill, backwards.

Its even worse when the PC he uses for his business also suffers from the same problem.
