my dad has decided that he wants an apple PC as we have been having problems with windows recently. we have been looking on the apple website and they are so much more expencive than a windows PC. so i was wondering if i would be able to build a PC for him and buy an apple OS for it? as this would be the cheapest solution

Not possible.
Although on paper a Mac is the same hardware as a PC, they aren't exactly the same. Their BIOS (if you can call it that) is completely different. They also have support for only a limited amount of hardware.

Basically yes. It has a standard Intel CPU and an Intel mainboard. Additionally, it includes a TPM module by Infineon. It has a PC BIOS (with BIOS setup and everything) and uses a PC partition table.
The real Intel Macs, though, use Intel's EFI (Extensible Firmware Interface) instead of a BIOS, and use GPT (GUID Partition Table)-partitioned disks instead of the legacy Master Boot Record. There is also a TPM (Trusted Platform Module) chip present; Mac OS X will not boot without it.

Its is possible if you carefully pick the hardware, but will require sme research. The legality of using retail media without alteration hasnt been established, although its against the EULA. But many EULA conditions have been found to be against EU law them selves. In the past you had to use modified copies of the OSX DVD commonly downloaded ilegaly, but new methods allow the use of retail media.

The boot loader that allows the use of retail dvds is boot-132, my MSI wind was running OSX and XP without any problems.

Depends what you will mainly use it for but i have a Macbook Pro and planning to purchase a Mac Pro once they release new verisons.
My Macbook Pro runs very smooth and does the job, i throw alot of my graphic design on the machine. Most of my files are about 2-4gigs, it works a charm!

No. A Mac cannot run windows software, just like Windows cannot run Mac software.
You can however do things to get round this if it is really important for you to have a Mac and run Windows software. You could dual boot the Mac, Windows can be installed on a Mac using Bootcamp. Or you could run a virtual machine, you can then install Windows on this VM. You will need to buy the VM software and a Windows license though. This may not be compatible with some software and games probably won't run very well though.
Thanks, it's just someone asked my advice on a Mac and I informed them it can't run Windows-based games. They didn't listen and bought one anyway...
They can, you just have to buy Windows for them as well.

Sure you can! I just costs about $1000. The plus side is it comes with a free computer.
