    Windows 7 - uninstall

    HI folks

Bit of an odd question to ask I suspect, so please excuse my lack of knowledge in this field compared to some.

I started with PCs when they first came out and was able to programme and edit and change boot files etc. But now I find I have been left way behind and more importantly, with a false sense of knowing what I am doing, stuck.

I have been running Vista for a long time on one of two hard drives in my machine. I then loaded Windows 7 on to a partition of the second hard drive thinking I could duck in to BIOS (or F8 whichever took my fancy) and just change the boot disk whenever I wanted to change from Vista to Windows 7.

Unfortunately, as many of you may also have found, the machine loads to a boot screen with Vista and Windows 7 as options, defaulting to Windows 7 and launching after 30 sec. This is regardless of what HDD I have as primary in BIOS.

Is there any way of getting rid of this BOOT process, preferably so that the BIOS adjustment is all I need? This will also help should I want to completely unistall Windows 7 since it will not clear itself from the BOOT file should I elect to format the drive. (I have not tried editting the BOOT file in Vista since I have not looked for it since I suspect I will have little clue what to do with todays BOOT files).

Thanks in advance for any help you may be able to offer.

    Impy

    Re: Windows 7 - uninstall

What's happened is Windows 7 has installed it's boot loader code into your primary boot drive, probably the one with Vista installed. To fix it you'll need to fix the Vista bootloader, then change the primary boot device in your BIOS settings to the second hard drive. Then fix the Windows 7 bootloader. Then things should work more logically with BBS.

    Thanks Aidanjt.

Will do a bit of searching for a Vista boot 'fixer'.

Does not sound too difficult (though I have heard myself say that before, lol).

Thanks. That looks a little easier than diving back in to DOS.

    Re: Windows 7 - uninstall

I used that too - as I currently have XP32 and Vista 64 on dual boot. Using BCDEdit, I made Vista64 the initial entry and reduced the timeout to about 3 seconds, so that if boot up and walk away, it wont take too long to finish the bootloader and load the OS. However, there is enough time to change the entry if needed.

I guess you can edit this through commandline, but I found that this program worked fine with no issues.

I went about removing windows 7 in the wrong way and just removed the parition and in doing so removed the bootloader, which of course results in a disk error(I didn't think that through to well lol!). thankfully its easy to sort out and If anyone finds they have done this themselves just boot with the vista disk and go to repair>the primary parition and click start-up and it installs the vista bootloader.

Furthermore, if you are testing Windows 7 and don't want it to default to windows 7 on boot just do: Run>msconfig, click on the boot tab and change vista to the default OS... job done

Edit: oops thanked the wrong person!
