200mmx linux project...

i have an old pentium 200mmx with a 2gb hard drive and i have a spare 1gb as well if required.i wanna run linux.but doesnt need to have internet support.just a machine to mess about on.whats the best to use on it?also minimum space used wold be v good.

debian with fluxbox as your window manager should go well

on that kind of spec, try slackware - i'd usually go for something debian based, but you NEED a net connection to set up a debian box

ok whenever anyone ever tells you that linux works well on old hardware...

well it doesn't, if you want a recent distro.

the onlyone i would try is vector linux - its designed for old hardware.

i am running a m10000 (1ghz, but a slow chip, ~ 600mhz p3) and i'm running gentoo. cpu optimisations make it okishly fast for linux2.6.3, kde3.2 (basically cutting edge stuff) but only if you compile everything yourself.

and trust me, that takes frikkin ages!

oh btw i would recommend gentoo if you actually want to LEARN linux. if you want to know what gcc is, how to recompile a kernel, how to use the x config file, how a mouse works under x, etc - other distros will do it for you - whats the point

I agree on using gentoo if you wnat to learn linux, but i would disagree without saying linux isnt good on old hardware, i had a mail server runing debian on a p100 and it worked fine.
