i want to sell my 2 320GB Sammy's and buy another 3 Samsung 1TBs and then RAID0 all 4 of the 1TBs.

does this sound like a sensible idea?
is this possible?
would my SB be able to handle such a huge throughput?
i imagine it could reach like 300mbps, maybe even 400
seeing as they can reach 125mbps each

is there a limit on the size of a RAID0?
cos it'll be a 4TB disk with 4 of them raided together.

but my main question is.. is this a sensible idea?
i have a 160GB external HD as a backup for all my photos that i want to keep.

IMO, not a good idea, RAID5 it.

No way i'd trust a RAID0 that size... if one drive died you'd lose 4TB of data...

RAID5 is a much safer option.

i only want the 4 1TB drives because they're REALLY fast and quiter than my 320GBs

you are unlikely to see anything approaching that.

No. You do realise if ANY of the disks fail in a RAID-0 array you loose the lot right? What do you possibly need a 4TB RAID-0 array for?

You can have a RAID of almost any size, the issue comes from Windows....

MBR based partitions (the normal type used by DOS, Windows etc) are limited to 2TB. Now, you can carve the raid up into multiple raidsets to get around this if your raid controller supports it.

To go past 2TB partition sizes, you need to use GPT partitions (like the new Macs). You need a 64bit XP or Vista install to use these and you cannot boot from them unless you have an EFI based system, not BIOS.


As for RAID0 across 4 drives, unless its a massive scratch drive which you could lose all the data on without a care in the world, DO NOT DO IT.

Having said about all this is a disk fails you will loose data, then this can be said for if the OP goes for a single 1TB drive and has everything on there, if that fails he still will loose all his data

Yes, but 4 drives in a raid 0 increases your chance of failure by 300%

but as i said, i mainly only want it for the speed.. and cos i have my 160GB beckup drive to store photos on.

and the fact that i've been saving for a holiday with all my mates, but half of them can't make it anymore, cos they can't afford it or whatever so i have £700 saved up for that which i can now go and blow on whatever i like.

i was thinking of maybe going i7 but.. i dunno.

I did a raid0 with 3 500gb drives about two years ago as a test.... was never mean't to be a permanent thing but I just got used to it as it ran really well... Also, I said I wouldn't store stuff on it but the temptation was just too great as I had 1.5 TB just sitting there screaming to be used...

Obviously, all was hunkey dorey, til it all went pearshaped a few months later and started displaying un-recoverable errors. But by that time, I had filled it with stuff and couldn't recover any of it...


why not buy a raptor for the OS for the speed, and then one/two 1TB for storage/backup??
