    Windows 7 as only OS?

Hi guys, just wondering if anyone recons there would be a problem running Windows 7 beta until either

    a) It expires and they dont release another
    b) They release the full version and I buy it!

I have XP (3 copies actually!) but dont fancy paying for Vista with W7 around the corner.. So I wonder do you think Windows 7 should be ok whilst I wait for the release candidate? System spec would be (building at the mo)

    Asus P5Q Pro
    Sapphire HD 4830
    4Gb Memory (undecided probably OCZ)
LG Blu-Ray Reader / DVD Writer

Anyone have a similar setup running well on windows 7?

By all means give it a go, but be aware that it's beta software and you *will* experience bugs (and you should report them, too). Be sure to take a backup before you rebuild so that you can recover if needs be (like I had to). You're the kind of beta tester that Microsoft must be falling over themselves for

Shouldnt be a problem at all. My boss in front of me is using it as his main machine and is even using it for a bit of Development with Visual Studio.

Yeah thats what I was thinking - I have no problems reporting issues - as it only helps in the long run. I just want to skip the vista os - dont see any point in buying it knowing I would be upgrading in a year!

Why not make a dual boot machine? Then if you find you have a piece of software that won't run properly in win 7 you can run it under xp. Having another partition for an occasionally used xp OS won't take up much space.

My friend Bishop is only using the Win7 beta on his main rig right now. ^_^ Personally, I'm dual-booting it with Vista Ultimate.

Re: Windows 7 as only OS?

I'm toying with this as we speak, I've picked up a spare 80gb raptor so might take the existing one out thats got my OS on it and then have the other one with w7 on it, could be tempted to raid the raptors and just back the old one upto an image...

Re: Windows 7 as only OS?

Technically I've got my old Vista on another partition but I've only booted in to that once since I installed W7.
I got a BSOD once, other than that and some issues with image mounting (VirtualCloneDrive works), its all good

Re: Windows 7 as only OS?

but what do you do when a new build comes along.. like ooh pick a number out of the air.. 7022 or something, you should really be starting from scratch rather than upgrading and you cant be doing that every few days

im keeping 7 purely as something a bit different with xp to provide continuity until such time as the final build is for sale

I feel the same as you do - I'm still on XP here and see no point in paying good money for Vista when Win 7 is just 6-12 months away.

I've just ordered a new PC with no installed OS ~ I'm planning to dual boot with XP 32-bit and Win 7 beta 64-bit. The old OS is just insurance in case I have trouble finding 64-bit drivers for old hardware like my two printers. It will also be something to fall back on when Win 7 beta stops working and there is, perhaps, an interim period before a full release can be purchased. I can live with that.

I've heard good things about the beta, it is, by most accounts, pretty stable and useable but one has to accept the risk that there could be some problems. I'm quite happy to give it a whirl on the new PC and pass on any feedback to Microsoft.

Re: Windows 7 as only OS?

Check my pc specs, my XP mucked up.....driver issue or something like that i had to re install rather than going to vista i went to 7beta

im using it on my main pc, yes dispite microsoft advice etc

and im intending to use this until they bring it out and buy it, if its reasonable,

So id say, ignore anything microsoft warns about, install it on your main pc its pretty stable, i have only found 1 thing wrong with it....gadgets dont seem to load up....meh?

7022 isn't a public build though, is it? As far as I'm aware the roadmap for general public consumption goes

    Public Beta (7000) > RC1 > RTM

There was no plan of multiple public beta builds, nor numerous RC stages. Microsoft are wanting lots of people using very specific builds, rather than lots of people using whichever build they can get their hands on by fair means or foul.

Re: Windows 7 as only OS?

    Hi robbieuk,
My name is Ron, and I’m part of the Windows Outreach Team. I thought I’d jump on here and see if I can give you some help.

First, let’s just establish that this is a Beta test edition of Windows 7 and not meant to be your sole operating system. If you are choosing to run it as your primary OS on your primary machine, you need to keep in mind that things might go wrong – it’s a Beta.

Also, the Beta will run out on Aug. 1, 2009, at which time you’ll have to reload your previous OS (which you’re OK with because you have your XP install discs). Make sure you have all your items backed up and have your original recovery or install disc handy. You can find out more about that process here: wwwdotmicrosoftdotcom/windows/windows-7/beta-pc-backupdotaspx

    Hope this helps!

    Cheers,
    Ron

Re: Windows 7 as only OS?

I think I'm gonna do it, both raptors are the same, so I'm gonna image my existing XP32 install, stick another 4gb ram in my machine and then install w7 over the 2 raptors in RAID.

Yes I know w7 is only beta but tbh its what Vista should of been in the first place imho and I'm happy enough with it on my laptop to put it on my main machine, which says a lot about it from my pov..

they don't recommend it but it hasn't been ANYWHERE near as bad as early vista was (for me), and this is only a beta!
