I'm getting more and more feedup with AVG, is there a good alternative?

I recently moved from AVG to Avast! and am generally pleased, although it has once crashed my system when it updated the virus definition file during a gaming session.
Are you looking for a freebie or something you have to pay for?
I switched to Avira when AVG just got too annoying.
The free edition apparently has one of the best detection rates (I'll try and find the link later if you want) and I find it less intrusive than AVG.
It has been criticised for taking too long to update but I havent found it a problem, it does give you a nag screen to update to the paid version each time you upupdate but otherwise not a problem.
I may be switching to a paid for set up soon and will probably give Kaspersky a whirl then as it seems to top many people's polls - it is available to download for a free one month trial.

Try Kaspersky Lab's antivirus products before you buy http://www.kaspersky.co.uk/trials, 30 days trial.
i've been on avast for over a year now. the only time i've had a problem is on mininova where is sometimes thinks there is a trojan on the web page links. otherwise it quick and i've had no problems...so far! touch wood.
Another vote for Avira, they are very good.

Another vote for Avira here; low on system resources, fast scan speeds and one of the best detection rates, even when compared to paid for anti-virus solutions.
With regard to Avira I would also say that the support through the forums is good if you have specific issues.

i got Kaspersky off Scan for very little money and its served me really well, so i see no reason why i shouldn't recommend it![]()
I recommend Avira nowadays, NOD32 has started to become a bit lacklustre, but Avira free still powers on through, and nearly always comes out near the top in detection rates.
As with others above I've used the Home Edition (free version) of avast for a couple of years now and install it on all my friends PC's when popping round to "take a look" at their systems. It takes a little tweaking to set it up how I like it (turn off annoying animations & voice notifications etc.), but once configured I find it very light on system resources.
I've been so impressed that I'm even considering purchasing the Pro version!!!
Edit: Check out the Home Edition here.

Hello,
for free avast!
for paid kaspersky,nod32,vipre or drweb
all very good solutions.
Thank you all for your comments and feedback, i've downloaded Avast so will try it first and see how I get on with it.
Hi,
I am surprised no one mentioned Bit Defender 2009.
I am running this on my laptop and it is very light on system resources.
Its not free though.
