different Active Directory versions in Win Server 2008?

Hello, I have a Windows Server 2008 which is going to be a file server.

All I want to do is be able to set up users and usergroups so i can give certain people access to certain network shares via NTFS permissions.

In Win Server 2003 there was just one role to install: "Active Directory". Now in Win Server 2008, there are like 5 different roles:
    • Active Directory Certificate Services
    • Active Directory Domain Services
    • Active Directory Federation Services
    • Active Directory Lightweight Directory Services
    • Active Directory Rights Management Services
This is a home network, i don't need anything fancy... just users and usergroups.

Any assistance with which one to install?

You could have done this with Windows Home Server. But anyway, now you have 2008, just use Domain and LDAP Services.

aidanjt, are you saying to set up these roles?:
    • Active Directory Domain Services
    • Active Directory Lightweight Directory Services
? Or are you referencing something else?

Active Directory Domain Services role sets up the AD domain, LDAP is the main data store for the AD domain for users, groups, computers, and so forth, on your domain.

Although the Domain services probably already sets up the LDAP service.. I haven't really done much with Win2k8 besides a little tinkering. But the basic principles have been the same since Win2k.

Right, I'm familiar with the basic principals of it too, but that's what I was wondering: specifically which roles I need to install. I don't want to install two roles if they are going to be redundant, you know?

Re: different Active Directory versions in Win Server 2008?

Start off with just Domain services. Hopefully it should just work as expected. Perhaps the LDAP role is for manual LDAP server administration. Since LDAP is rather useful for other non-microsoft/AD jobs.

LDAP should be installed with AD automatically.

As Jay says, just select Domain services, LDAP will be automatically installed as it is a pre-requisite.

Re: different Active Directory versions in Win Server 2008?

    Just for reference

    .Active Directory Domain Services
What you are looking for i.e. classic Windows domain type role

    .Active Directory Federation Services
If you have several forests / organisations and want to join them together (shared GALS etc.)

    .Active Directory Lightweight Directory Services
A lightweight Directory, either on it's own (previously called ADAM) or as the underlying database for Domain Services

    .Active Directory Rights Management Services
    Nasty copyright protection stuff
There is no me. I do not exist. There used to be a me but I had it surgically removed.
