    Ubuntu 9.10 announced

    http://fridge.ubuntu.com/node/1831

Sounds ok, a move towards 'cloud' computing seems to be 'where it's at'.
Am not fully convinced by their wish for faster boot times, as it seems to be a frequent goal despite being a little longer each time in my experience. Although the statement of using bits from Moblin may actually make it come true...
But i'm a happy 8.10 user (with the remix / netbook interface) on my Acer Aspire 1, and will surely upgrade to 9.04 just for the hell of it, so i'll inevitably get this too.
I'm commenting on an internet forum. Your facts hold no sway over me.

There's a bug in Ubuntu where it's PM triggers excessive load/unload cycles even when the disk may be in use, which drastically reduces the life expectancy of hard drives. I noticed it on my laptop when with Ubuntu running on it my hard drive would be *very* hot to the touch compared to Gentoo (with, or without PM) or even Vista. There's a bug report on Launchpad somewhere about it.

Nope.. Last gave 8.10 a whirl a month ago.. Hard drive is still excessively toasty.

I must confess that i hadnt heard of this, or even noticed it really in all my Ubuntu years. I also notice on that launchpad page that 3 successive 'fixes' have been issued, although clearly if the first had actually been a fix we wouldnt have had 2 more, so who knows if it works.

Do you know if this is a standard bug for all installations, or only for certain configurations of hardware?

I agree that a better / easier / nicer visual theme on default is good for the ever - expanding rollout of Linux in general, however let's remember how easy it is to manually change the theme.

Edit: Never mind, got it, cheers. Phoronix article.

Edit again: Ooh, that animated sun on Fedora 10 boot looks completely useless but lovely. More of that please!

    Hey,
    glad you found some links.
maybe a gui for changing themes should be made.
doesnt realy matter to me its only two commands but for newbies it could be helpful.

AFAIK, just hard drives with aggressive PM defaults on the firmware. WD Scorpio Blue's and possibly WD Caviar Green's for e.g.
