    Ubuntu Hard Drive Read Problem...

Hey guys, slight problem with Ubuntu 8.10 reading my 2nd HD.

Ive got Ubuntu 8.10 installed on my 1st HD which is formatted as ext3 where the boot files are and allocated space for SWAP too.

Now the problem is with the 2nd HD, which has only started playing up recently. Everytime I open to access the drive it takes an age to load - at least 5 minutes. The drive is formatted as NTFS and is where I keep all my media files such as music, videos, pictures and such.

Any ideas to why its acting up??

    Cheers
    Ace

Re: Ubuntu Hard Drive Read Problem...

A few ideas, although nothing definite. I've certainly had problems when a drive is also accessed by windows (as its boot drive), crashed, and left the 'active-whatever-its-called' flag still on, but that's not what's happening here.
Do you have SMART enabled in the BIOS? I just want to check that the drive itself isnt failing.

Yep, SMART is enabled in BIOS for the drive...well its set to 'auto' should I set it to enabled? The drive isnt a relatively new one, its a 4 year old seagate PATA drive.

When I installed 8.10 it worked fine, its just recently - like say the last week or so - that ive been getting this problem.

    so you tried....

    dmesg |grep -i error

    dmesg |grep -i disk

For example if i want to query nic speed status etc....

    linux:~ # dmesg |grep -i duplex
tg3: eth0: Link is up at 100 Mbps, half duplex.

Tells me my colleague the lazy git not set his nic to full duplex like he should

Did you forget to place the string you were looking for? after the grep?

    That indeed I did...

dmesg |grep -i disk reports as follows:
