Application to search for duplicate files

    Hi guys

I was wondering if there was an application that would search out duplicate files and keep only one. I've got backups of my docs going about 8 years back now but the problem is there are about a billion different directories and a lot of them contain exactly the same content. I'm looking for a way to sort all the files (but not alter directory structure, not at first anyway) by type and then find duplicates and indicate them. Then I can move the files into one big unified 'archive' of pics/vids/music rather than having folder structures like:

    Backup (H
    /

    /archive
    /January 2009

    /archive/oldstuff
    /archive/March 2008
    /archive/Febuary 2008
    /archive/January 2008
    /archive/December 2007

    /archive/oldstuff/my documents/

Basically because I never decided on the perfect way to backup stuff, half the time I just copy and paste my documents into a new folder for whatever month it is lol. Other times I've downloaded programs to incrementally do all that, but then as soon as I reinstalled windows or whatever it didn't remember what was incremental and what wasn't.

Since I have my docs on a seperate partition, I could just create an image of that partition every month, but then that's not very navigable for when I'm feeling nostalgic and want to look at pictures of me cuddling my ex girlfriends.. so that's why I've decided there must be a way to just look through every directory, grab every file, compare it to duplicates, then sort it by age and type.

Sounds like a job for Beyond Compare (http://www.scootersoftware.com/)
