Legalities with Office 'Ultimate Steal'
http://www.microsoft.com/student/dis...imatesteal-uk/
What's the legalities with this?
A colleague (full time student) has just enquired about the cheapest way to acquire Office. I tried to explain the Ultimate Steal deal, but my colleague seemed adamant that after the student has graduated, legally, this license would be null and void. Legally (I stress). Whereas with the Home and Student edition, technically, after the student graduates the license could be used as a Home user.
Surely, with this being the 'Ultimate' package, this would come with the same legal technicalities that the less Homer and Student edition will come with?
and... having read the full terms, there's nothing about the end user only the person buying it!
Re: Legalities with Office 'Ultimate Steal'
I don't think there's any problem with the issue of graduating and finding the license is invalid, I don't think even Microsoft are that harsh!
Re: Legalities with Office 'Ultimate Steal'
If you buy the lifetime license (not sure if they're doing the one year thingy this year) then it's yours. The only way it might become dubious from a legality point of view would be if it were used for commercial purposes, and H&SE isn't licensed for that either.

The Ultimate Steal deal grants a RETAIL license, ASSUMING ELIGIBILITY
This means that if you meet the purchase criteria, you get the same license you would get buying in a shop - i.e. the shop is what's special, not the product
It absolutely does not expire after graduation - though access to the store will be revoked, the purchase is final

^^This, although they do offer a time-sensitive option, to buy a licence for a year as a cheaper option, obviously that one expires...

Indeed they do, normally through MSDNAA. However, legally speaking this should be stopped being used by the student when they graduate.
Having said that I've been in several meetings / presentations where MS have said they would never peruse this unless it was used in a commercial capacity.

And Office is VERY rarely available through the Academic Alliance compared to visual studio etc.
The NHS agreement for the licence was different as it was while the user was an employee and while the agreement stood, with the breakdown on the recent contract that is now void so the NHS reduced cost copies of Office etc are now not legit technically.
Will they do anything, I doubt it
Re: Legalities with Office 'Ultimate Steal'
Yup Finlay. Although many 'student support' areas of the uni have licences they will give out to students that need them. That does not fall under the MSDN where I work though.
People can find the PDF on the MSNAA software at : http://download.microsoft.com/docume...-datasheet.pdf
