If those features matter to you, why not pay?

Get one of the free vnc versions, set up a free dns redirector address and account in your router or through software and set up port forwards in your router and you're done.

TightVNC and the default remote desktop in Windows have always worked well for me.

I hear gotomypc.com is very good and fast. You do have to pay after the 30 day trial, but from what I've heard it is well worth it.

You seem to be missing Hexxeh's point - if you *must* have the premium features then... pay for it. Otherwise the free offering does pretty much everything that you need, it's secure simple to use.

You *could* always setup and SSL VPN, but that would require a whacking great chunk of hardware, network security knowhow and more. Not everything that you can pay for is available for free without tradeoffs along the lines y'know...

    Re: accessing your pc externally

Even at USD $69.95 /year or USD $12.95 /month, for one PC, LogMeIn's still not bad vfm for a hastle free service & setup. Cheaper than GoToMyPC at £11.99/month,£107.99/yr. for a single PC.

    Re: accessing your pc externally

You could still upgrade your version of Windows to one that supports RDP and it will be cheaper within a year. Or even buy a new version of Windows Vista Business or Ultimate and it'll work out cheaper after two years.

Or free, if all you need is remote desktop (ie not remote sound and printing) functionality.

    VNC is insecure, btw

Unless you use UltraVNC at both ends

This. Or in the case of *nix, set up an ssh tunnel.
