    Identifying a file type

    Hellooooo,

so I've been given what I've been told is an access mdb file. It seemed odd when I looked at the file because it didn't have an extension. Just to be sure I tried renaming it and opening it in Access but it didn't work.

I opened the file in notepad++ and at the top it says...

TAPE followed by unrecognisable characters, however I was able to see it said (with each . representing the notepad++ representation of NUL) m.i.c.r.o.s.o.f.t.S.Q.L.S.e.r.v.e.r.

So, any ideas how I would go about opening this SQL code? Is it a tape dump of an sql server, an actual MS SQL database (im used to the mysql directory structure) or anything else?

Any ideas, or things I can check?

    Thanks
    -Chris

Not sure if it is a dump or a usable DB, but to check it you can download the SQL Express edition from Microsoft that will allow you to open it (hopefully)

    http://www.microsoft.com/express/sql/register/

If you go there and register you then get the link for the download

    Re: Identifying a file type

Did it work? Or was it just a tape dump.

    Re: Identifying a file type

I'm still not entirely sure as I got called away to other urgent stuff. Apparently SQL server express doesn't have an import function either (something loads of people have grumbled about). There are guides to get round this but I've been told to save it for another day.

    Thanks for your help though
