Is EDI a big bag of... ?

I'm guessing EDI is 'the future' and I'm guessing it's taking off in the States a lot quicker than it is over here.

From the 37 seconds I've just spent looking into EDI, I gather, this is to improve business to business ordering, save money and basically cause havoc?

Am I right in thinking EDI is a procedure and not a standard, and therefore, there are thousands (exaggeration) of suppliers of EDI systems all doing things slightly different?

Basically meaning I'm going to end up with a load of different EDI 'logins' for different suppliers?

Is it just a glorified way of eSigning stuff?

EDI is quite a cool piece of technology.

Yes it is a process rather than a standard.

Scan use EDI with some of their suppliers. It means that Intel (for example) have a consignment of stock in the Scan warehouse that still belong to Intel, and Scan only 'buy' it when the sale is made. Intel can also change the costing, and therefor the price, on the Scan site whenever they want.
