    Re: Windows 7 download

The download links are now only officially available on Technet and MSDN. That said, there should be an RC available soon, so it's probably worth holding off rather than going to the dodgy sites (if Technet and MSDN aren't available to you)

I was just looking for this the other day, I have the opposite question... I have 64 and want 32. A quick search only lead me to dodgy torrent sites that I would rather avoid.

    Cheers

Yeah, but Windows Server 2003 was sold commercially as an RC..

and I'm not 100% sure, but i don't believe it ever advanced beyond RC stage. it just got a RC2, and some service packs, but I think its still a RC

May, apparently now. not that it matters, just updated form 7048 to 7057 and it went like a charm

Erm... no it didn't. It was released, then later R2 was released. R2 is not RC2.

Server 2008 R2 is in RC now as far as I can see on Technet.

Educated guesswork and they are tweaking the lineup somewhat compared to Vista.. http://www.hexus.net/content/item.php?item=17082

..but you gotta assume based on Vista prices once they settled against XP...

Home version ~£ Same price as Vista Premium

Ultimate/Pro version ~£ Same price as Vista Ultimate/XP Pro

Little or no price difference between x86 and x64?... Maybe even encouraging OEM's to install x64 with some price incentives would be clever move.. You listening MS?

It's the server version of the Windows 7 family.

XP (Client) = Server 2003 (Server)*
Vista (Client) = Server 2008 (Server)
    Seven (Client) = Server 2008 R2 (Server)

*Yes yes, I know it's not exactly right, but just for demonstration sakes.

an RC is a Release Candidate, ie a final bugcheck before the OS goes RTM (Release To Manufacturing). R2 is Release 2: think of it kinda like a service packed version with a few extra features (for example Active Directory running at Server 2008 R2 functional level allows for AD objects to be retrieved from the recycle bin).

Believe me, Server 2003 would *not* have been in use at so many companies if it never got past RC stage!

    Re: Windows 7 download

Am I just being special Splash? I can't find the 32bit iso to download on MSDN, mind you it was rather late last night when I looked I don't think I was concentrating much.

Is there any word on a version of 7 for netbooks? (keep seeing rumours posted about). Edit *scratch that* answered my own question (http://arstechnica.com/microsoft/new...k-question.ars)

I will definitely by buying windows 7 because I need a 64bit os (want to upgrade to 4gb+). I'm going to buy the retail version for a change, that way I can use it when I next upgrade.
