Anybody got the community version of Mandrake 10 yet?
I've just about finished (96%) getting it from the torrent seed on Mandrake's site.
It uses kernel 2.6 and I'm hoping that it is better than Fedora.

Well, I've noted two things I don't like about it already, oh no, three things.
1. It uses LILO
2. It can't read the partition table on drives properly (not the two I tried it on anyway - had to let it do away with all partition data and start a fresh)
3. No Silicon Image SATA RAID support.
Still, I'm sure once the community has given their feedback the public (is that what they'll call it?) version will be somewhat better tuned.
In (my own) personal opinion, Mandrake is rubbish.
Well, it's good, but it just holds your hand like Windows does, it's rubbish if you want to get the whole "linux" feel
On a binary distro I believe Debian or even Fedora are pretty decent alternatives.
AMD Athlon XP 2400+ | Connect3D Radeon 9600PRO | Seagate Barrcuda 80GB HDD | 512mb PC2700 Crucial RAM | MSI KT6 Delta FIS2R | Zorro Silver Case | Windows XP/Gentoo Linux
Well, I thought I'd try it seeing as though another version was out.
I must say I already prefer Fedora because it gives me more control over setup than Mandrake, whilst not being over complex. I can use Linux but I aren't exactly a guru, lol.
I guess Fedora Core2 will be the upgrade for my current distro (Fedora Core1.)
MEPIS or Gentoo on my other comp me thinks.
I notice the three ISO's for V10 are up at www.linuxiso.org
I'll be d/l them overnight, one at a time, over the next three nights and give it a try.
I'll agree that Mandrake isn't a 'pure' Linux experience but I don't think it's rubbish, I'd say it's a good introduction, at least you can use the thing straight out of the box as an alternative to Windows.
And you can still use the text console to tinker. A good starting point, until you feel ready to give something like Slackware a try, imo.
