Re: how to dual boot vista and xp with XP installed first

    Hello,
have you got a spare partition ready to install vista on?

you will want to use the great easybcd
when you install vista it will overwrite the xp bootloader with the vista bootloader.
once vista is installed you can install easy bcd and then add windows xp to the bootloader very easily.
all you do is tell easybcd which partition xp is on, give it a label click on ok and finally click on the save button at the top.
when you reboot you should see a boot menu with two options vista and xp.

    feel free to ask questions.

    Won't even be needed.

Vista will detect your XP partition & add it to the boot loader automatically

Re: how to dual boot vista and xp with XP installed first

i will need to partition the disk first, what the easiest way to do this?

    i found this : http://apcmag.com/how_to_dualboot_vi...ots.htm?page=2

however i'm not quite sure, why you use gparted to partition the disk then use the vista dvd again to partition it on page 3?

    thanks

Vista's installer will allow repartitioning. XP's would require formatting all your data to do it.

Re: how to dual boot vista and xp with XP installed first

May as well just use Gparted to shrink C: and then install vista on the other partition.
you can do the rest of the partitioning later on if need be.
unless you know what your doing its best not to use the commandline diskpart.

Well, yeah... except Vista's installer could do the same job, saving you an unneccessary burn...

Re: how to dual boot vista and xp with XP installed first

is there any reason why its taking this long,
basically i have shrunk the primary partition by 27gb, and its saying that its "moving 204gb to the right" its the second time its doing this now.
Do you think there is somthing wrong?

Re: how to dual boot vista and xp with XP installed first

You have XP on the partition, it needs to create space and then create the new partition so it is fine. Correct me if I am wrong but I think gparted is a live CD so it will be a bit slow I would imagine .

resizing partitions is a MAJOR operation. It's fine, taking hours is normal, and things will only go to hell if you try to abort mid-way

Re: how to dual boot vista and xp with XP installed first

just to let you know, gparted worked, it shrank the size of the hdisk to the size i wanted, but then

when i rebooted the computer booted up the bios bits but when it came to boot into windows it

said "hard disk not found press ctr alt del to reboot".

I went back into gparted to do a scan to check it had worked, it all seemed fine!

i have absolutly no idea whats wrong, luckly i backed up all my data, except my applications!

I certinly wont bother again repartioning my hardisk ever, just caused more trouble than it is!
