    The best antivirus?

Well i know this is asked quite alot but i have a virus(shouldnt leave pc un attended at a lan party!) and well i think its gone (doing scan with nod32 picked it up just). I was wondering what alternatives are there to nod32? I was thinking of buying kaspersky internet security as its only £10 as nod32 is almost out of time, but are there any better alternatives? Preferably a whole package of firewall/anti spyware and anti virus for a price ~£15.

    Any suggestions are appreciated .

I recently setup a rig for my younger bro and put on Avira [free]. Seems to be good and used alongside COMODO firewall. Comodo has antivirus as well but did not set that up.

    Re: The best antivirus?

Worth trying avast or F-prot (free for home use). Nod 32 has a good reputation, as does kapersky. But the effectiveness depends on how often you update them, and no AV has 100% detection rate (if one did, the other would be out of business) - partly because they are always playing catch up. Ot also depends on what you want to scan, and how often. In your case, connected at a Lan party, there isn't a lot that you can do - most viruses are caught through e mail - and incoming emails can be scanned - as can files if they are injected onto your machine, but if it was installed and executed because the machine was left running with an admin account open, you are at high risk.

As I think you realise the best AV is you and how you use your computer. Never routinely running as admin is a good start. If you are running Vista, don't disable UAC. If yiour not, install a good software firewall - and heed what it tells you.

    Re: The best antivirus?

I personally use Kaspersky, and also have Avira as an on-demand scanner. Both are very good, Avira seems to catch alot of crypted files whereas Kaspersky seems to be better for 0-day releases.

I'd also mention Bitdefender and AVG - both are very honourable.

Any will do really - the best form of prevention is yourself, common sense and caution are the best form of protection.

For instance you can tell when a file/site is most likely dodgy. Also if you are unsure about a file you have downloaded try running it through www.virusscan.jotti.org or an online binary anaylser http://anubis.iseclab.org/

    Re: The best antivirus?

Well i know most is common sense, just thought id look into alternatives at the license for nod32 is almost out of date and kaspersky seems alot cheaper. What is the difference between antiviruses when it comes to OEM and retail, anything?.

edit: Seems this virus/spyware is bad.... nod32 killed some stuff but i still get redirected from searches on google to adult friends and bingo etc, i may reformat as i installed kaspersky trial and it wont even load....

    Re: The best antivirus?

Tried Kaspersky when I had a go at Windows7. Didnt really like it and it seemed to want confirmation from anything that tried to access the internet e.g. steam, guild wars etc.

I have always used AVG free, it is simple enough for what i need.

Probably have a go at Avast on my next clean install.

    Re: The best antivirus?

Even trying the kaspersky beta for windows 7 proves to be a failure when it comes to firewall, it forces my internet connection to drop every minute so ive turned that off. Recommendations for a firewall? Cause i got the beta edition till sept i believe(runs out) so need a firewall .

You want an antivirus/firewall for a BETA OS, and you expect it to work flawlessly?

No i dont expect it to work without flaws im just saying a problem like that should be fixed as its been out for a bit now(the kaspersky beta). The non beta av/firewall failed aswell and would lock up my system so had everything turned off to sort it.

Just looking for a firewall to use while the firewall is broke thats all...

    Re: The best antivirus?

I have been using NOD32 for over a week now & after using Norton, McAfee, AVG and PC-Illin, I say NOD32 wins hands down. Fast scanning, very frequent updates and great detection rates, along with a small footprint (use of resources) makes it a winner.

I am a recent defector from NOD32 to Avast. Was fed up with the increasing false positives I got with NOD32. That and my PC will not install the new v4 NOD32.

My NOD32 subscription is up late summer so I thought I'd move now and I'm happy with Avast so far.

I use AVG 7.0 Professional and it works well for me. I'm not saying it is the best but I think it is at least equal with Norton.
