    Mtyh TV help

Planning to get myth tv set up as i'm going to add a htpc downstair soon and i also want to be able to access all my files upstairs as well and have a server which can record.

Now on the upstairs pc i'm planning to dualboot Vista and Mythbuntu so i can swap between the two when i want to. My downstairs HTPC will just run only mythbuntu and i can set both of these up fine.

My server i'll install ubuntu and add mythbuntu over the top on thier website.
I also want to be able to use my server as a nas so i'm going to add apache on which i feel i may need help installing. I've looked but it seems really complicated as i've never really used linux before.

My final thing i really need help on though is the file formats that myth tv will play.
    My major ones will be...
The files in which it will record tv shows in (i assume it'll play these )
DVD Rips (these will be either ISO's or VOB's)
and finally i need to know whether it will play my Blu Ray and HD DVD rips.

I'd also like to know how to add the files onto myth tv so how would i go about adding a dvd rip.

EDIT: Would like to point out that i do own the DVD's/Blu Ray but i just can't be bothered to go upstairs and get the disc when i can have it on a server (plus it's cheaper to only have one drive instead of one for each machine)

Yes, the internal player will cope with this

and finally i need to know whether it will play my Blu Ray and HD DVD rips.
Ah, not *easily*. It can be done, but it's an enormous quantity of work (requiring compiling your own subversion copy of mplayer, and per-movie settings)[/QUOTE]

MediaPortal will handle all this. It is also multi seat like MythTV, though obviously you do need windows.

For the HD-DVD/Bluray rips you will need Arcsoft Media Center as well. There is a plugin that launches Arcsoft when a disk is inserted or an image mounted using DeamonTools, handing back to MediaPortal once you come out of that.

if it was just BD, then you might be able to use the PowerDVD plugin, but I don't know if it handles rips, and they dropped HD-DVD support like a hot brick when toshiba pulled the plug.

Having said this, if you were to strip away all the extras, just leaving the main HD feature as a MKV or something, either of MythTV or MediaPortal should be able to handle them just like a regular recorded video, you just need the H.264 decoder (the PowerDVD decoder is very good on Windows).

Had a look at trying to do this but it doesn't seem what i'd call easy which is a shame.

    Re: Mtyh TV help

I've never looked into it myself. I know it is trivial with VOB data, but no idea what either of the HD formats do with their content.

Must be possible though, the amount of illegal content floating about is testament to that
