    O/S Suggestions

Hi, i am currently running vista home prem, however this takes a while to boot up and be ready for general use, not to mention all i normally do on this computer is surf the internet and use my media centre application. I was wondering if there was a better operating system that i could dual boot with vista to enable a much faster boot time, i am aware that soe distros of lunix can bott very quickly but am unaware of what ones to look for. I do need a dual boot however because i need vista to run the powerful CAD programs which i currently use and also for the girlfriend to use, coz she will have no clue with linux . Here is a current spec list also:
    Asus P5N-E SLI Mobo
    Inno3D 8600GTS GPU
    Core 2 Duo E6750 2.66GHz CPU
    Corsair DDR2 XMS2 2x2gb RAM
    Corsair HX520W PSU.
I tried to install ubuntu and i got GRUB error 1.5 on startup which stopped me form booting into either OS and as a consequence i had to re-install vista and lose all of my picture, music etc.
    Cheers for any advice offered
    Matt

What's your "media centre application"? If it's Windows based and won't run through WINE then you're wasting your time with linux (unless there's a viable alternative for you to use).

Linux is great, don't get me wrong but I think you need to really sit down and decide what you want from an alternative OS (beyond faster boot times - you could probably trim the startup services and have Vista boot quicker if that's really all you want). Any flavour of Linus will happily dual boot with Windows so long as it's set up correctly.

Linux MCE is fast and for great for people with no understanding of linux.. Loads of great features too!

    http://linuxmce.com/

Has a very easy installer as seen in the video.

If you want more of an OS to do the basics too then any new KDE distro comes with Linux MCE pre-installed...

Linux can also boot very very slowly is things are not set up right.

That PC should be able to boot Vista pretty quickly... providing Vista is set up right. Don't blame a whole OS for a PC being messed up

    What Jay, said.

But im sure you can find something to do during that 1 minute boot up time e.g. have a piss, get a drink, etc

    Re: O/S Suggestions

If you get problems with a bootloader always try your XP or Vista CD first before giving up!

If you are using XP you can very easily solve bootloader problems by loading up the recovery console and using the fixmbr command

Vista will fix this automatically when you use the recovery function on your Vista DVD..

As long as you installed the bootloader to the same hard drive as your Windows OS its easily solvable you can then start again with linux by deleting the linux partitions using GParted..
