For some perculiar reason, WinXP decided to play a little game yesterday afternoon. That being it was absolutely fine until a restart when it wouldn't boot. At all. It just hung on the screen with the WinXP logo and moving green bar for a long time. Safe mode worked though.
I tried system restore, booting with all the services/startup items disabled and shouting at it. Nothing worked.
I then gave up and started anew with a fresh install (no SPs) and installed SP2, Office plus all the updates (only 700+MB of 'em) it said it wanted. All was well.
Then things took a serious turn today when I installed SP3 (the 70MB job via WindowsUpdate).
Again we're back at it's silly little game where the darn thing won't boot. Safe mode is fine though.
So, after uninstalling SP3, I tried again with the 300MB download version. Same thing. No boot. Back into safe mode and off came SP3, again.
It's not the AMD issue as the CPU is a C2D E6600 and I dare says meddling with the Intel power management file thing could be "interesting" to say the least. Nothing is overclocked.
The bizarre bit is it did work. Then, presumably because Jupiter was in alignment with a flowerpot or something, it's all gone pear shaped.
As you can probably imagine, I'm back at SP2 and "making do" but even if I don't put back SP3 back on, an inkling as to which gremlin is playing silly b**gers would be grand! All suggestions listened to!![]()
