Resizing Server 2003 OS Partition, Raid 5.

I know there's hundreds and hundreds of articles all very similar to my request out there, however, I just thought I'd throw my own problem into the mix in hope that one/some of you have some suggestions to help put my mind at rest.

We have a server thats running Raid 5, with 4 72gb Physicals making one Logical, with 2 partitions. The OS Partition is 10gb, the Data partition is 200gb (there abouts).

The OS Partition is progressively getting close to it's limit and I want to address this.

The Data partition has a few installed programs but 90% of the information is data (Docs etc).

At present theres 2gb free on the OS and 85gb free on the Data.

I'd like to allocate 15gb of the Data partition to the OS partition.

My plan is to backup the contents of the Data partition to an image, and also copy the documents to another server. Then I plan to take an image of the OS partition, resize this and drop it back.

Can anyone see any problems? Offer suggestions, or other solutions?

I have Symantec Backup Exec for Windows Servers (8.5) to play with...

The Drives are basic, and NTFS.

Have a look at the Acronis Products. Can't remember which one we have now, but it made a whole image of the server and could resize the partitions even on a RAID array. Think it was Disk Director which managed the partitions. Very easy to do and a worthwhile investment.

Obviously make sure you backup and verify that backup before playing with your partition table, but you seem to have that covered. Once that's done grab yourself a recent Linux livecd (Ubuntu or any other, really), boot into the live environment and start GPartEd. Use that to resize your partitions, reboot into Windows and you're sorted.

Would I be able to do that without having to clear out the d: (Data)?

Yes, but messing with the partition table always carries some risk - so back it up first!

So long as there's enough free space to complete the table resize I see no reason why not, but make sure you backup first. Might also be worth a defrag as well if the disk is fragmented.
