Linux stole the best 15 gigs of my life :(

Okay so the title is something you'd expect in the sun's it section. Never the less I still have a problem.

So i bought a lovely icybox nas (which so far is impressing the hell out of me.). As it's linux based, or so I’m led to believe this is the reason, it only detects fat32, ext2 & ext3 formatted hard drives. This applies both to internal and external ones. So i spent a few days moving stuff off my 1tb external hard drive. Booted up ubuntu (live version). Deleted the partition, created a new one, then formatted to ext3. Problem is there's 15gb used space that i can't see nor access. There was a folder once I formatted which I deleted in Linux, but the 15gb is still being noted as used. Any ideas?

Ps. Sorry if this is the wrong section, seemed the most relevant.
