    Vista or Windows '07

Iv just bout a Studio 17,

    Intel Core 2 Duo T6400 2.0GHz
    3072mb
    17" Wide XGA+ WLED Screen
    320gb HDD
    ATi Radeon HD 3650
    Vista Home Prem

But i cant decide what OS to use. I will be using it for web browsing, word processing, a fair amount of film viewing (HD and regular) and some games - mainly stuff on steam (left 4 dead, team fortress 2) and thats about it.

I havnt read up on windows 7 but apparently its quite nippy & all round not a bad deal, but im curious as to what your opinions are on it.

Am i better off using Vista or Windows 7?

    thanks

    Hello,
where did you get it from?
I would assume dell themselfs would have the deal to get windows 7 home premium when it comes out if you have only just ordered it.

If you are using it as your main rig, then use a stable OS not a release candidate.

Being as i've got vista already installed i've decided to stick with it as all my settings are there. I couldn't see a big enogh difference between the two to change all my files to it now and put them back when it runs out.
I suppose i could dual boot.

If you don't mind changing the files in 12 months time go for 7 although drivers may be hard to find for a laptop but i've found the vista ones work fine

Also remember that by next March 7 wont be useable. (well technically it will be, shutting down every 2 hours?!)

Vista. Purely because RC isn't the finalized code and anything could happen.

Still using Vista. Tempted to run W7 on my old machine to see what its like but not really fussed. I'll buy W7 proper when its been out for a while and has matured.

    Re: Vista or Windows '07

Sensible route would be Windows Vista x86 (although x64 has so much footing now that it should become the standard for compatible platforms).

However, the more fun route is definately Windows 7 x64

    Re: Vista or Windows '07

I vote W7. Yeah its RC, yeah anything can happen. But the same goes for Vista really - it could only take a normal windows update to turn a useable PC into a gibbering wreck, and it does (and has) often happen. It's unusable by March, but it's scheduled for release 6 months earlier than that, plenty of time to save up for the real thing. You will be able to upgrade from it with a little tweak here or there, and even if you can't it won't be difficult to backup and use the build in file transfer wizard.
As for stability, I'd rank the windows 7 first beta's ahead of Vista (and I was an ardent Vista user) and the RC is no exception.
    Moo.
