Alternative to WMP in Windows 7

Most of my quite large music collection is in Ogg rather than MP3 format and WMP doesn't recognise it properly, it won't log it in the media library and it'll only play them if I run the files from explorer.

Is there any way to persuade WMP to treat Oggs properly? Or failing that a good alternative to replace WMP?

I tried it a while back - went back to WMP in the end, but I wouldn't agree with either of the points you made based on what I saw with that particular build. As always, there were a range of interfaces which seemed quite nice, just a case of picking the most suitable one.

I don't honestly remember why I stopped using it, but I think in the end WMP does everything I could possibly want it for (ie music library and easy playlist creation), so there just wasn't any point.

Re: Alternative to WMP in Windows 7

Winamp isnt a resource hog if you use the classic interface

Its using the newer interfaces that is resource hungry from what Ive found, I've used winamp for years with no problems. A good advantage of Winamp is the sheer amount of DSP effects you can use with it compared to WMP.

I'm giving winamp a try for now, it seems to do what I want, i.e. organise my media and play oggs.

Songbird looks pretty good, I like that it scrobbles as well. I think I'll give it a try this evening.

I'm kinda partial to AIMP2 - it's very light and fast compared to winamp thesedays. Doesn't do video but all I want is a music player.

+1 This is a pretty sweet program.
Early releases were a litte buggy but they have a pretty active community and it runs quite nicely now.
Lots of handy add ons - two of my favourites are 'Mashtape' - this provides immediate artist info, reviews, pictures and videos from a variety of editable sources.
and 'Concerts' - you give it your postcode, it scours your library and tells when a band is playing near you.
There is also Twitter and Last.Fm integration and tons more handy add ons.

    It's skinnable too.

Arguably better audio quality (than mp3) but mostly habit now, the majority of my collection is in ogg and switching wholesale back to mp3 would be a colossal PITA.
