Been using the intel x25-e's in anger since autumn, bit of slow down, nothing seriously degrading performance.

The usage pattern i'd guess would be more than the average power user like OP here would do.

Yes flash cells die, but that is after quite a few read writes! The trim command is more about performance optomization.
