Re: OK folks anyone found any up to date vista 32bit v64bit reviews

In terms of running 32bit programs, the speed difference is negligible in either direction on a 64bit platform.

With 8Gig, you *don't* want 32bit, it's that simple. If you do, you'll limit yourself to 4gig of addressable space, which will probably just give you over 3 gig of usable RAM.

There really isn't any ifs or buts here - If you're asking for 'benchmarks' but have 8gig you need 64bit. Period

Re: OK folks anyone found any up to date vista 32bit v64bit reviews

speaking (well writing) as someone who has both 8gb of ram and vista64, I can quite honestly tell you...

it doesnt make the blindest bit of difference in gaming - crysis, far cry 2, gothic 3 and mark of chaos - all well known system hogs/crawlers.

folding@home - its running right now and the mem usage is 1479MB.

I've barely seen it go past 2.2GB and thats with folding and far cry 2 at the same time.

I, like you, got my system to be 'future proof', when i say future proof, i'm talking another 7 years (like my last PC). who knows what will be around then. 512mb ram was good enough up till last christmas when I was running the same things i do now, albeit a smidge slower - crysis at 15fps on a radeon 9600, 512mb ram and a 1.8ghz athlon 2500+

so i think 8gb should be more than enough for long term future proof - 7 years worth. anyways I got my 8gb for £32 for a 2x2 kit so it was a no-brainer to get more at the time.

also, i read something in the corsair section a while back about the 4V8gb question. there was only about 1% performance difference between the two.

i take it you've gone the AMD Phenom route, or you would have said 6gb or 12gb ram - I7's have tri-channel.

Memory is cheap, just go all the way and get 8gb while you're at it .

the ram alone was a small fortune , infact it was the most expesive component i cant remember the exact price but 2x4GB sodimms from crucial (which are alot cheaper than dell) comes to £607.19 inc vat!

i also plan on disabling pagefile and superfetch and making a 1 or 2gig ram drive and put my browsers temp folder in it and still have 6gb of ram to spare

    Laptops are expensive!

RAM upgrading is often an easy future upgrade, when prices fall right down.

Re: OK folks anyone found any up to date vista 32bit v64bit reviews

yeh dont i know it but its my once in a blue moon go nuts purchase, the only thing im gonna do further to it is take out the 500gb drive stick it in my 2.5inch esata caddy and im just looking at the ocz vortex's i dont know where i will go stump up the cash for the 250GB version or i will install a few games and apps that i will use on the laptop and see if i can get away with the 120GB version

basically i want this to be a serious jump in performance from my latitude e6500 and thats why im wondering if there is many games that will benefit from the extra ram , as i said i will be making a ram drive to for the likes of firefox's temp folder , or i may not depends if i can be bothered with all the tweaking !

Re: OK folks anyone found any up to date vista 32bit v64bit reviews

In my opinion, Superfetch is one of the main advantages of Vista over XP and it will make use of your RAM, so reconsider if you really want to disable it (more on this in the next paragraph...). 6GB of "spare" RAM is a waste.

Superfetch is only an issue if you shut down or hibernate rather than using sleep, because it will have to repopulate the cache every time. If somebody always shuts down or hibernates, they might consider Superfetch to be something that slows their system to a crawl. I believe that it runs at low I/O priority, so if another application wants to access the disk, it gets priority, but if you have a very slow hard disk (such as a 4200RPM laptop drive) you may still notice that the system is a bit unresponsive immediately after boot. Once the prefetcher has done its job, you should find that application loading performance is greatly improved. My HTPC used to use 4200RPM laptop drives, and I found that Superfetch made a huge difference to launch times - provided that I always put it into sleep.

Re: OK folks anyone found any up to date vista 32bit v64bit reviews

yeh i know of those issues but i remember reading on the ocz forums a tuning guide for working with large amounts of ram with ssd's and they basically disabled every unecessery writes and reads to the disk as with a large amount of ram and ssd then it greatly improves the life of the ssd and its performance , i hope to have the ssd within a month or two but i will be messing around with configurations untill i get the ssd

yes with an SSD its a very different kettle of fish. I would really recommend windows 7 for an OS if your going with an SSD.

Myself i'd cut back on CPU + RAM if it ment getting a good SSD.

TRIM is only a workaround for inherent flaws in SSD technology. Basically, unless you're using a netbook, or the vast majority of the drives use is read-only, then you'd do well to stick with mechanical HDDs.

I know im going to get a kicking for this but £2700?? geez and i thought £1400 on my HDX was a lot.

If you have a choice i'd maybe reconsider as your could do a lot better for your money.

To answer your question as others have said, 4gb+ Vista 64bit or Win 7 64bit.
