I noticed that even though windows 7 says "it's safe to remove the device", the LED of my USB device is still on.
And as far as I know, removing a USB device with it's LED still lit, will eventually damage your device.
Anybody know the answer?

It does the same thing for me in Vista with the Sandisk Cruzer Micro, it didn't in XP, but after using it for over a year I still haven't had any problems so I don't think it's anything to worry about.
They got it right in an eight year old O/S (xp).
You think they would get it right in Windows 7?
No problems here either. Not noticed if the light stays on or not, but never been any damage.
I have the same issue as emu76. when in vista, the light on the flash drive stayes on but there has never been any damage when I have taken it out![]()
The LED on most devices, certainly most USB storage devices, intimates power is being supplied to it, not that data is being transferred (some flash as a secondary meaning), meaning that it's perfectly safe to remove the hardware whilst said LED is still lit. It will be powered, it's plugged in.
Moo.
When Windows reports "the device can now safely be removed", it means all I/O operations have completed - so any data being written has been committed so there is no risk of data corruption (the biggest potential issue with removabale devices).
I have never heard of physical damage to a USB device through removal even during writes.
~ I have CDO. It's like OCD except the letters are in alphabetical order, as they should be. ~
