    help, im looseing my icons!

Im running Windows 7 on my Dell Studio 1737.

Recently iv started to loose my icons, instead of the icon appearing with its neat little picture it is being replaced with the .dat (data, as in something no program can open..i think).

First started with the magnifier on my desktop, instead of the entire icon the .dat icon appeared in front of it, with the default magnifier behind it, but now the folders icon has gone the same way. Instead of the yellow open folder it is just the data icon altogether. This is on the toolbar, file explorer & desktop wheres its happening.

Any ideas what could be causing this & how i can revert it?

    thanks guys

It sounds like there's something wrong with file type association in the registry. Can you still use the icons to open folders/files?

Also is this the icon you mean?

If you're on Vista like your "My System" says you could try refreshing the icon cache by changing your desktop resolution settings to 16-bit then back to 32-bit.

Re: help, im looseing my icons!

I haven't heard of this happening myself and it's strange that it's happening to folders as well. I've just been thinking it's probably not file type association as that wouldn't cause folder icons to change. Maybe something to do with the icon cache. Also UAC in Win 7 should have prevented anything from altering the registry without your permission. ATM I can't think what to try but I'll have a look round the web for you to see if I can find out what might have happened (not familiar wit Win 7)...

Edit: I've found this webpage. Try the steps on there: http://www.winhelponline.com/blog/ho...windows-vista/
